The safe starting point
OLED screens do not all have the same surface or cleaning instructions. QD-OLED, WOLED, and OLED displays covered by glass can differ, and manufacturers may set different rules for their coatings and warranty. Start with the cleaning instructions for your exact monitor model. If the manual says not to use a particular solvent, do not use it.
For loose dust, a clean, soft microfiber cloth and a light touch are a practical first step. Do not press hard, scrub, or drag visible grit across the screen. Turn the display off and let it cool first if the manufacturer recommends doing so; unplug it when its instructions call for that. Never spray liquid onto the display. If the manufacturer allows a liquid cleaner, put it on the cloth as directed, keep moisture away from the panel edges, and use only the method specified for that model.
Why model-specific instructions matter
The term “OLED” describes a display technology, not one universal surface finish. Monitor coatings, glossy or matte surfaces, touch glass, and the panel maker can all affect what the display maker recommends. Advice for one QD-OLED television should not automatically be applied to every OLED monitor, laptop, or TV.
Samsung Display published results from a six-week test of 25 cleaner, spray, cloth, and wipe combinations on multiple QD-OLED screens. Its article says the research was specific to QD-OLED, warns that results may differ on other models, and tells readers to check the screen manufacturer’s guidelines. MSI’s monitor guide gives cleaning advice for QD-OLED, WOLED, and IJP OLED panels, including a recommended kit of soft microfiber cloths. Those two sources support discussing their tested or recommended methods in their stated scope. They do not validate every cloth sold as “microfiber,” or establish that a branded cloth was part of either company’s test.
A careful cleaning routine
- Find the monitor’s official guide. Search the exact brand and model number, or use the paper/electronic manual. Follow its warnings about cleaning products, warranty, power, and liquid.
- Prepare a clean cloth. If the manual allows microfiber, use a clean, soft cloth intended for delicate screens. A cloth carrying grit, dust, or residue can scratch or smear. Follow the cloth’s own care instructions.
- Remove loose dust gently. Use light strokes without pressure. Do not wipe across visible particles with force.
- Treat fingerprints only as the manual permits. If a liquid is allowed, use only the stated liquid and amount. Apply it to the cloth, not directly to the screen, unless the display maker explicitly instructs otherwise. Do not substitute household glass cleaner, alcohol, or another solvent based on a generic internet guide.
- Let the surface dry. Do not turn the monitor back on or reconnect it until it is dry if the maker’s instructions say so.
If the manual is missing or unclear, the lowest-risk move is to avoid solvents and contact the manufacturer. Do not assume that a method tested on another panel is safe for yours.
What not to claim from a cleaning study
Samsung Display’s study is useful because it documents the combinations it tested, but its own caveats matter. It is not a test of every screen surface, every manufacturer’s warranty, or every microfiber cloth. A result for generic microfiber cannot support the claim that a particular retail cloth has the same performance. This article therefore does not call any cloth “Samsung-tested,” “approved by monitor makers,” scratch-proof, or proven to protect a screen.
Cleaning removes surface dust or smudges; it does not fix burn-in, image retention, dead pixels, or panel defects. If a mark remains after cleaning according to the manual, check the manufacturer’s support page rather than pressing harder or trying stronger chemicals.
Choosing a cloth
A soft, clean microfiber cloth can be useful if your monitor’s instructions allow it. Cloth weave, fiber, finish, cleanliness, and care all matter; “microfiber” by itself is not evidence that a cloth has been tested for your exact display.
For context, Python Optic sells a microfiber screen-cleaning cloth. This is a commercial relationship, not a result of the Samsung Display or MSI tests. If your model’s manual allows microfiber and you want to see the product, here is the PYTHON-OPTIC cloth on Amazon (affiliate link). The choice to use it, or any other cloth, should be based on your display maker’s instructions. We have not independently compared it with other cloths or established that it prevents scratches.

Common questions
Is 70% ethanol safe on every OLED screen?
No universal answer follows from these sources. Samsung Display tested its QD-OLED screens and describes a 70% ethanol solution in its cleaning guide. MSI recommends a cleaning kit of soft microfiber cloths for its OLED monitors. Those are useful instructions from the two sources for their stated contexts, not a substitute for the guide to your own device. If the manufacturer of your monitor says to use a dry cloth only, use a dry cloth only.
Can I use glass cleaner or disinfectant wipes?
Do not assume they are safe. Samsung Display and MSI compared multiple cleaning combinations and show differing results for specific products and cloths; they do not establish that any cleaner labeled “screen safe” works on every coating. Use a cleaner only if the monitor maker names or allows it for your exact model. If it does not, choose the method the manufacturer does specify rather than experimenting on the display.
Should I clean on a fixed weekly schedule?
There is no schedule that applies to all rooms and displays. Dust levels, touch, room use, and the manufacturer instructions vary. Clean only when the screen needs it and in a way the display maker permits. More frequent wiping is not automatically better: unnecessary contact can create more opportunities to drag grit over a surface.
What if the smear does not come off?
Stop instead of increasing pressure or trying a stronger solvent. Check the display maker’s troubleshooting guidance; a mark may not be surface dirt. Image retention, burn-in, coating damage, dead pixels, or another panel issue cannot be diagnosed by repeated cleaning. Contact the manufacturer’s support if the mark remains.
What this guide does not establish
This is a general explanation of how to read cleaning instructions, not a compatibility list for every brand and model. It does not demonstrate that a product is scratch-proof, that one cleaning agent is safe across QD-OLED and WOLED coatings, that any retail cloth has matched a manufacturer test, or that cleaning will prolong a display’s service life. The source studies are company guidance about their own tests, and the exact screen manual remains the best authority for a particular monitor.
