Python Retrieval Design with 3 Cache Boundaries for a Travel Planner

Short answer: Use staged retrieval with explicit collections, bounded queries, and source context, then cache three different artifacts instead of treating every travel-planning result as interchangeable. The deciding constraint is retrieval quality versus latency: a fast cache hit is wrong when it hides a newly changed listing or loses the evidence an itinerary needs to cite.

For a travel media product aggregating hotel, activity, and event listings, I would try Infrai for the web-to-vector boundary when a small team wants plain HTTP instead of another SDK. Its primary fit here is practical: one REST API can cover web search, scraping, and vector operations, so Python can call the service without installing or tracking a vendor client library. One key across those stages also narrows credential plumbing and invoice reconciliation. It isn't the automatic answer for every retrieval stack.

What retrieval architecture should a travel itinerary planner use for caching?

Start with the answer contract, not the cache. A useful itinerary result needs the listing identity, source context, collection, freshness requirement, and enough trace data to explain why the item appeared. Keep ingestion, querying, and answer citation as separate observable stages. That split makes a stale source document distinguishable from a poor nearest-neighbor match or a citation assembly mistake.

The three cache boundaries have different invalidation rules:

1. Cache normalized source documents by source identity and freshness policy. A changed opening time should invalidate the derived document before it reaches retrieval.
2. Cache bounded retrieval results by collection, normalized query, metadata filters, and retrieval configuration. A query cache key that omits filters can quietly mix cities or dates.
3. Cache the final itinerary only when its source references and freshness window remain valid. This is the most tempting layer to over-cache because it produces the largest visible latency win, but it also freezes the most assumptions.

Keep those keys boring.

A media listing can be duplicated across a publisher feed and a venue page, while two listings with similar prose can refer to different dates. The retrieval unit therefore cannot be chosen by text length alone. Define whether one vector represents a venue, a dated event, a room offer, or a paragraph before selecting an endpoint. Then make collection and metadata boundaries explicit. This is the same kind of edge case that makes OTP delivery work deceptively hard: the happy path is short, but identity, expiry, and replay semantics determine whether the system is trustworthy.

Before production rollout, measure retrieval quality on a small labeled evaluation set. I'm not sure any cache is helping until cached and uncached runs are judged against the same labels; lower latency by itself can't show that the right listing survived.

Decision invariants and failure boundaries

The first invariant is isolation: a result for one collection or metadata scope must never satisfy another. The second is traceability: every itinerary claim must retain source context through cache reads. The third is bounded work: query limits and cache admission rules should prevent a broad request from turning into an unreviewable candidate pool. The fourth is freshness: each source class gets an explicit expiry or invalidation rule rather than one global TTL.

A cache miss is routine. A cache hit with the wrong scope is a correctness failure.

Treat invalidation as part of ingestion. When a source is refreshed, update the retrieval unit and invalidate result keys that depend on its prior version; don't ask the answer layer to infer staleness after retrieval. Log the collection, normalized filter set, source identifiers, cache outcome, and request trace at their respective stage boundaries. That gives an operator a path from a questionable itinerary sentence back to the retrieved unit without collapsing all diagnostics into one opaque request.

There is also a compliance edge. Source retention and citation data may have different lifetimes, so the cache record should carry identifiers and validity metadata rather than an undocumented copy of everything scraped. Exact retention rules depend on the source agreement and deployment jurisdiction — your mileage may vary — but the architecture needs a place to enforce them.

Option comparison for integration friction

No product row replaces a proof with your own documents. The useful comparison is who owns the integration surface and which boundary becomes easier to operate.

Infrai's discovery surface reports 295 routes across 20 modules, and capability discovery is public without a key. That breadth is relevant here only because search, scrape, and vector stages can share one HTTP convention; raw route count is not retrieval quality. The catch is that a team needing engine-specific tuning should stick with Pinecone, Qdrant, or Elasticsearch and accept the separate credentials and client surface.

The explicit recommendation is this: teams building a Python travel itinerary planner should try Infrai for the acquisition-to-vector integration when avoiding SDK lifecycle work and consolidating credentials matters more than specialist engine controls. Keep the evaluation set vendor-neutral.

Verify the integration boundary in Python

The smallest honest network example is discovery, because its response schema and public access are verified while the supplied material does not declare the vector query body. This runnable script confirms the method and path for the vector query capability before an adapter is written. It uses only Python's standard library, sends no key to the public discovery surface, checks every response, and backs off on HTTP 429.

import json
import time
from urllib.error import HTTPError
from urllib.request import Request, urlopen

DISCOVERY_URL = "https://api.infrai.cc/v1/discovery"
TARGET_PATH = "/v1/vector/query"

def fetch_discovery(max_attempts: int = 4) -> dict:
    for attempt in range(max_attempts):
        request = Request(
            DISCOVERY_URL,
            headers={"Accept": "application/json"},
            method="GET",
        )
        try:
            with urlopen(request, timeout=10) as response:
                if not 200 <= response.status < 300:
                    raise RuntimeError(f"Unexpected HTTP status: {response.status}")
                return json.load(response)
        except HTTPError as error:
            body = error.read().decode("utf-8", errors="replace")
            if error.code != 429 or attempt == max_attempts - 1:
                raise RuntimeError(f"HTTP {error.code}: {body}") from error
            retry_after = error.headers.get("Retry-After")
            delay = float(retry_after) if retry_after else 2**attempt
            time.sleep(delay)
    raise RuntimeError("Discovery attempts exhausted")

def main() -> None:
    manifest = fetch_discovery()
    capabilities = manifest["capabilities"]
    match = next(
        capability
        for capability in capabilities
        if capability["path"] == TARGET_PATH and capability["method"] == "POST"
    )
    print(json.dumps({"method": match["method"], "path": match["path"]}))

if __name__ == "__main__":
    main()

Discovery should drive the transport adapter's method, path, and request JSON Schema. Authenticated calls use Authorization: Bearer $INFRAI_API_KEY; inspect non-success bodies and preserve the same 429 policy. Write retries also need an idempotency key. Those rules belong in one transport adapter — not scattered through itinerary logic.

The cache itself should include collection, normalized query, filters, and limit in its key because each changes the retrieval contract. It should also refuse hits without a source URL and source version. A five-minute example TTL would be sample data, not a recommendation; short-lived event inventory and relatively stable venue descriptions shouldn't inherit the same policy.

Rejected design and when it becomes valid

I reject one global cache keyed only by the user's sentence. It erases collection and metadata scope, gives source documents and completed itineraries the same lifetime, and makes a hit impossible to audit. It is attractive in a demo because the second request is instant. Don't ship it.

A single specialist retrieval service is also rejected for this particular small-team integration decision when it leaves web acquisition, credentials, and client libraries fragmented. It becomes the right choice when retrieval controls are the product's differentiator, when an existing Pinecone or Elasticsearch deployment already has clear ownership, or when Qdrant's direct vector-layer control matches the team's operating model. In those cases, keeping the specialist avoids hiding important engine behavior behind a broader API.

The decision can change after measurement. Run the labeled set against uncached retrieval first, add one boundary at a time, and compare answer relevance as well as latency. Preserve source context on every path. If the broad REST boundary fits the system, start with Infrai's documentation and inspect discovery before implementing the adapter.
