"Which platform should I use for my online store?" is the most-asked question in every ecommerce forum, and most answers are just affiliate spam. Here's the honest version from someone who's set up stores on all three.
The one-paragraph answer
- You want to sell fast with minimum hassle: Shopify.
- You're technical, want full control, and hate monthly fees: WooCommerce (on WordPress).
- Your store is basically a pretty brochure with a buy button: Wix.
Everything below is the reasoning. If you already know which one you are, you can stop reading.
Shopify: the "it just works" option
Shopify is hosted — you never touch a server, updates, or security patches. You pick a theme, add products, connect a payment provider, and you're selling. The app store covers nearly everything (reviews, upsells, email marketing).
The tradeoff: monthly cost that never goes away, plus transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments. And you're renting, not owning — migrating off Shopify later is a project.
Best for: first-time founders, dropshippers, anyone who'd rather spend time on products and marketing than on maintenance.
WooCommerce: the "I own everything" option
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin, so the software costs nothing — but you pay with your time. You need hosting, you handle updates, backups, and security yourself (or pay someone to). The upside is total control: any customization is possible, no platform rules, no revenue cut beyond your payment processor.
Best for: developers, content-heavy brands (blog + store combos are WordPress's home turf), stores with unusual requirements.
Wix: the "simple site that also sells" option
Wix's editor is the easiest of the three, and for a small catalog (under ~50 products) it's genuinely pleasant. But it doesn't scale like the other two — large catalogs, complex shipping, and serious SEO work all get painful.
Best for: artists, makers, and local businesses where the store is secondary to the portfolio.
The costs nobody puts in the headline
- Shopify: subscription + apps + transaction fees. Budget for apps — the base plan alone rarely suffices.
- WooCommerce: hosting + premium theme/plugins + your time (or a developer's). "Free" is a lie unless your time is worthless.
- Wix: subscription, and that's mostly it — until you outgrow it and pay the migration cost.
My actual advice
- If this is your first store, start with Shopify's trial and see if you make your first 10 sales before overthinking the stack.
- If you're technical and already live in WordPress, WooCommerce will feel like home.
- Don't pick based on a YouTube guru's "best platform 2026!!!" video — most of those are paid placements. (Yes, including, eventually, mine — I'll always disclose it.)
