If you are applying for a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) in Spain, the photo is one of the easiest ways to lose an appointment slot. Many applicants arrive with a leftover UK, US or Schengen passport print—usually 35Ă—45 mm—and discover at the policĂa desk that Spain’s identity-card format is smaller: 32Ă—26 millimetres on a plain white background.
This guide explains who needs a TIE photo, what the official Spanish rules say, how 32Ă—26 mm differs from passport size, and how to prepare a print-ready image at home. It is practical information based on published Ministry of the Interior wording. It is not legal advice, and it does not promise that any office will accept a particular print.
Who needs a Spain TIE photo?
Non-EU nationals authorised to stay in Spain for more than six months are generally issued a TIE as their foreigner identity card. That includes many post-Brexit UK residents exchanging older green residency documents under the Withdrawal Agreement, as well as students, workers and family-reunion applicants who must collect a card after their visa or residence authorisation is granted.
EU citizens normally receive a registration certificate rather than a TIE, but the same 32×26 mm “carnet” photo size is the Spanish national standard for DNI identity photography. If a local office asks for a foto for foreigner documentation, assume they mean the Spanish identity size unless they explicitly request passport size.
Official photo specification
Spain’s Ministry of the Interior publishes the same core wording for DNI photography that offices also apply to TIE prints: a recent colour photograph of the face, size 32 by 26 millimetres, with a uniform smooth white background, taken from the front with the head uncovered, without dark glasses or other garments that hinder identification. The oval of the face—eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin—must be clearly visible, and the print should be high resolution on good photographic paper.
Reading the Spanish order carefully matters. “32 por 26 milĂmetros” / “32Ă—26” means 32 mm high by 26 mm wide—the classic Spanish carnet / driving-licence crop—not a square and not a passport rectangle. Religious or medical head coverings may be allowed when the full facial oval remains visible; fringe or bangs must not hide the eyebrows and eyes.
Spain TIE / DNI photo checklist (published rules)
| Rule | What offices expect |
|---|---|
| Printed size | 32 Ă— 26 mm (height Ă— width) |
| Background | Uniform, smooth white |
| Pose | Front-facing, head uncovered |
| Expression / face | Full facial oval clearly visible |
| Glasses | No dark lenses; eyes must be open and visible |
| Paper | Recent colour print on quality photo paper |
Important
Always re-check the appointment notice from your extranjerĂa or policĂa office. Local desks can refuse prints that look cropped, shadowed or older than a few months even when the millimetre size is correct.
32Ă—26 mm vs 35Ă—45 mm passport photos
The confusion is almost always about passport leftovers. ICAO-style passports and many Schengen visas use 35×45 mm. Spanish national ID photography uses the smaller 32×26 mm carnet format. They are not interchangeable, even if both are “white background headshots.”
Size comparison
| Use case | Typical size | Aspect |
|---|---|---|
| Spain TIE / DNI / many Spanish IDs | 32 Ă— 26 mm | Portrait carnet (~1.23:1) |
| Spain / Schengen passport (common) | 35 Ă— 45 mm | Taller passport (~1.29:1) |
| US passport / green card style | 51 Ă— 51 mm (2Ă—2 in) | Square |
If a shop asks only for “foto carnet,” confirm 32×26 mm with white background. If they default to “pasaporte,” you will likely receive 35×45 mm—the wrong print for a TIE appointment.
Common reasons TIE photos get refused
- Wrong size: 35Ă—45 mm passport prints, 3Ă—4 cm variants, or square passport leftovers.
- Cream, grey or patterned backgrounds instead of plain white.
- Shadows behind the head or uneven lighting that breaks the “fondo uniforme blanco y liso” rule.
- Hair, fringe, masks, headphones or dark sunglasses covering the facial oval.
- Low-resolution booth prints, matte inkjet that looks muddy, or photos that are clearly years old.
- Head tilted, chin up/down, or cropped so the shoulders dominate the frame.
At-home workflow that matches the Spanish size
- Take a clear front-facing phone portrait in soft daylight against any plain wall. Leave space above the head; do not pre-crop tightly.
- Open PhotoGov and choose Spain TIE Card so the processor targets the 26Ă—32 mm (width Ă— height) output used for this format.
- Download the individual digital file, then print on glossy or high-quality photo paper at the true 32×26 mm size—or use a print layout sheet and cut carefully.
- Before your appointment, measure the cut print with a ruler. Confirm white background, uncovered face and recent likeness.
PhotoGov’s Spain TIE page stores the millimetre crop and white background for this document type so you are not guessing aspect ratios in a generic editor. You still need a sharp source photo and a correct physical print if the office wants paper.
What “recent” means in practice
Spanish wording asks for a recent photograph. Offices rarely publish a hard day-count for TIE prints the way some visa portals do, but using a likeness from the last few months is the safest approach—especially if your hair, beard, glasses habit or weight has changed. Recycled passport photos from a previous trip are risky twice over: they are usually the wrong size and may no longer match your face.
If you are exchanging a UK residence document for a TIE, do not assume a UK passport booth print will be waved through. UK passport photos follow a different size and background convention. Bring Spanish carnet prints prepared specifically for the appointment.
Printing and cutting without ruining the crop
Home printing works when you control scale. Set the printer to actual size / 100% scale with no “fit to page.” After cutting, measure both sides with a ruler: you want roughly 26 mm across and 32 mm tall. Slight shop tolerances exist, but a clearly oversized 35×45 mm rectangle will stand out immediately beside a correct carnet print.
Avoid writing on the back with a ballpoint pen that embosses the face, and do not staple photos to forms unless an office explicitly asks. Keep prints flat in a sleeve rather than folded in a passport.

Practical tips before you go to the office
- Print more than one copy. Appointments are hard to reschedule if a print creases in your bag.
- Wear clothing that contrasts with white so your shoulders do not blend into the background.
- Do not digitally beautify skin to the point that the face looks retouched; identity desks want a natural likeness.
- If an office photographs you on site with an automated module, follow their instructions—even if you brought prints.
Bottom line: for a Spain TIE, ask for 32×26 mm white-background carnet photos, not passport size. Prepare the crop carefully, print cleanly, and treat acceptance as the issuing office’s decision—not a guarantee from any online tool.
