Linux kernel contributors are debating whether to remove the “Assisted-by: LLM” tag from AI-assisted patches.
The label was introduced to help maintainers review those contributions, but its use has been inconsistent: about 10% of 18,533 non-merge commits in Linux 7.3 through release candidate 7 carried it.
The discussion weighs useful visibility into contributions against restricting tools or judging contributors by AI use alone.
The discussion began on the Linux public mailing list when developer Sasha Levin suggested removing a special flag that had been introduced earlier this year to help reviewers identify which code had been written with the help of artificial intelligence.
How effective was the special marking?
According to the data presented, of the 18.533 changes recently made to the kernel, only about 10% had the relevant marking. Many developers either ignored the rule or intentionally omitted it, resulting in the marking not providing the required reliability.
The proposal to remove this requirement has gained support from other key executives, such as Greg Kroah-Hartman. On the other hand, developers like Laurent Pinchart argued that they still need clear expectations about the use of these tools.

Torvalds' reaction and the rules of responsibility
Torvalds reacted strongly to the thoughts of restrictions, sarcastically noting that, by the same token, they should ban code translation tools and force everyone to write everything from scratch. As he pointed out, the skill of a program cannot be judged simply by whether it used artificial intelligence.
Officials clarify that removing this requirement does not mean that transparency stops or that unverified texts are accepted. The content rules remain as they are and creators continue to bear full responsibility for what they deliver, including following the required attestation procedures. The change has garnered support from several prominent executives, but has not yet been finalized and implemented.
