Someone is complaining that Looker Studio is slow.
A dashboard takes forty seconds to load.
The immediate reaction is to blame the tool.
"Looker is too slow."
"We need to migrate."
"We need a custom frontend."
Look at the query logs.
The dashboard is running a full table scan on a 500GB fact table every time a user changes a date filter.
Looker Studio isn't the bottleneck. The query path is.
Blaming the visualization layer for a warehouse execution problem is like blaming the paint for a crumbling foundation.
Before you throw money at BigQuery BI Engine, isolate the variables.
Performance hypotheses usually mash three distinct things together.
First, connector caching. Is the dashboard just failing to cache the extract?
Second, query shape. Are you running a distinct count on a high-cardinality string?
Third, BI Engine support. Does the query use supported data types and operations?
BI Engine can't fix a query it doesn't support.
If your query falls back to the main BigQuery engine, the BI Engine reservation sits idle while you pay for it.
Don't guess. Benchmark.
Take the five most-used, slowest queries from the dashboard.
Run them without BI Engine. Record the latency. Record the bytes billed.
Turn on a BI Engine reservation. Run the exact same queries. Record the latency. Record the bytes billed.
Calculate the cost of the reservation against the savings in bytes billed and the value of the latency reduction.
If the query isn't supported, latency won't drop.
If the query is just badly shaped, latency might drop, but the cost won't justify the reservation.
A reservation is a blunt instrument. It solves a specific class of problem and ignores everything else.
Before you provision one, ask yourself: which exact metric will prove the bottleneck is in the compute layer, and not in the query design?
If you can't answer that, you haven't fixed a performance problem.
You've just bought a faster way to run a bad query.
