Two sentences, in the same review.
Thorough. And slow.
Or decisive, and does not bring
people with him.
Or careful, and hard to get
a decision out of.
You read them as two facts
about yourself.
They are one fact,
measured twice,
by people standing
in different places.
A trait is not a virtue
or a flaw.
It is a setting.
The care that makes your work
worth trusting on a Friday night
is the same care
that makes your estimate wrong.
Nobody experiences the setting.
They experience what it produced
at the level it was running
on the day it reached them.
Now watch what you do
with the second sentence.
You try to remove the trait.
You stop checking things.
You decide faster,
on less.
You let the thing go out
without the read-through
nobody ever saw you do.
The complaint goes away,
and so does the praise,
and only one of those
gets reported back to you,
because the thing people rely on
is invisible until it is missing.
A year later you are quicker
and less trusted,
and nobody can point at
what changed.
You spent your strength
buying an average version
of somebody else's.
So do not remove it.
Meter it.
Ask what it costs per week,
and where.
Find the two situations
that deserve the whole of it,
and give it those,
and put a limit on the rest.
A time box.
A second reader.
A date you are not allowed to move.
The trait keeps running.
It just stops running unsupervised.
The two sentences stop
contradicting each other
the moment you read them
as a report on where the dial sat
when each of those people
stood in front of you,
rather than as a verdict
on who you are.
And when somebody else's habit
is irritating you,
go looking for the strength
on the other side of it.
It is always there,
and you will need it
before the year is out.
