Xiaomi launched the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in China on September 23, 2026. The headline is not the spec sheet. It is a privacy screen that reads the room around you, detects onlookers through the front camera, and can auto-trigger by location. Both models get the feature, whereas Samsung locked its version to the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
The two flagships arrive with a pair of 200MP cameras each, rear displays that are making a comeback, and batteries that top out at 8,500 mAh. China pricing starts at ¥5,999 (about $900), and Xiaomi has confirmed the Pro line will finally make it to international markets later this year. That is a shift from the Xiaomi 17 Pro, which never left China.
I verified the specs against 9to5Google's hands-on spec breakdown and cross-referenced the privacy features with The Verge's launch coverage. The core numbers hold up: 7,000 mAh and 8,500 mAh batteries, dual 200MP rear cameras, and the return of rear displays on both sizes.
Key Takeaways
- Both the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max get Xiaomi's new privacy screen, with onlooker detection and location-based auto-triggers. Samsung reserved the same idea for its Ultra.
- The Pro Max carries an 8,500 mAh battery and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip. The Pro settles for 7,000 mAh and a non-Extreme variant.
- Rear displays return: a 2.7-inch panel on the Pro and 2.9-inch on the Pro Max, both running at 120Hz.
- China pricing starts at ¥5,999 (~$900), and Xiaomi has confirmed both Pro models will launch internationally this year.
What the privacy screen actually does
Xiaomi's privacy screen builds on the idea Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S26 Ultra's Privacy Display, then pushes it further. The most important difference is breadth: it works across the whole system rather than just when you are staring at one app.
According to The Verge's report on the launch, Xiaomi's version activates for notifications, floating windows, and split-screen views, contexts Samsung's implementation does not cover. "Samsung built a privacy display that only guards one app at a time. Xiaomi made it ambient, following you through every layer of the OS."
There is also a location angle. You can set the screen to auto-activate when you are at work and relax when you are home, with smart triggers for high-risk spots like airports and elevators. The front-facing camera watches for onlookers and suggests kicking privacy mode on when someone is peeking over your shoulder.
Xiaomi is positioning this as a hardware-plus-software feature. The underlying mechanics look like a combination of an angle-limiting display filter and the front camera doing detection work. The exact panel tech has not been fully detailed in English-language coverage yet.
The full spec sheet, side by side
The two phones share a lot of DNA, but the differences are more than just size. Here is how they break down, based on the official spec list 9to5Google published.
Xiaomi 18 Pro
- Display: 6.4-inch AMOLED, 2436×1120, 120Hz
- Rear display: 2.7-inch, 912×596, 120Hz
- Battery: 7,000 mAh with 100W wired and 27W wireless charging
- Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6
- Cameras: 200MP main (Light Fusion 960), 200MP 3.2x telephoto, 50MP ultrawide
- Memory and storage: 12/16GB RAM, up to 1TB UFS 4.1
Xiaomi 18 Pro Max
- Display: 6.9-inch AMOLED, 2624×1208, 120Hz
- Rear display: 2.9-inch, 976×596, 120Hz
- Battery: 8,500 mAh with 100W wired and 27W wireless charging
- Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6
- Cameras: 200MP main (Light Fusion 960L), 200MP 3.2x telephoto, 50MP ultrawide
- Memory and storage: 12/16GB RAM, up to 1TB UFS 4.1
- Special edition: a transparent-bodied variant
The camera array is the same bet on both phones. The 200MP main sensor uses Xiaomi's Light Fusion branding, and the 200MP telephoto is a Samsung HP5 with 3.2x zoom (75mm equivalent) that can focus as close as 12cm. Pair that with a 50MP ultrawide and you have a setup that covers a lot of ground. Xiaomi's exact sensor naming between the "960" and "960L" variants is still a little murky in the early coverage, and GSMArena's database has not yet published a full listing.
The battery story is the other headline. Both phones use a silicon-heavy cell (Xiaomi claims around 32% silicon content) to hit capacities that would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago, and both support the same 100W wired / 27W wireless charging speeds. If you are weighing these against a Galaxy S26 Ultra or the broader 2026 flagship field, battery life is where Xiaomi is trying to pull ahead on paper.
The chip situation
Both phones run Qualcomm's latest, but the Pro Max gets a higher-binned "Extreme" variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 while the standard Pro uses the non-Extreme version. It is a familiar pattern: Xiaomi reserves the top chip tier for the larger, more expensive model.
One caveat: the "Extreme" naming has not been independently confirmed against Qualcomm's official materials yet. Both early reports use it, but Qualcomm's branding has shifted around before, so treat the exact label as provisional until Qualcomm's official product pages weigh in. The earlier Snapdragon 8 Elite with Oryon CPU benchmarks give you a sense of what this silicon family is capable of.
Pricing and the international launch
China pricing starts at ¥5,999, roughly $900 at current exchange rates, and scales up with storage. That is aggressive for what is on offer here, especially the Pro Max with its 8,500 mAh battery and transparent edition.
The bigger news for buyers outside China is availability. Xiaomi has confirmed the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will launch internationally later this year, a genuine change of course after the Xiaomi 17 Pro skipped global markets entirely. "For the first time in a generation, Xiaomi's Pro flagships are not a China-only product, and that reframes the whole value conversation against Samsung and Google."
Conclusion
My read: the privacy screen is the real story here, and not just because it is clever. It is Xiaomi's clearest attempt to out-feature Samsung on the one thing Samsung bet its Ultra lineup on, and it does so on phones that undercut the S26 Ultra on price while matching or beating it on battery and camera specs.
If the international pricing lands anywhere near the ¥5,999 China starting point, the 18 Pro Max in particular becomes a serious problem for Samsung's value case: a phone with an 8,500 mAh battery, dual 200MP cameras, and a privacy screen that works system-wide. Frequently asked questions
What is the Xiaomi privacy screen?
It is a feature that limits the display's viewing angle so people beside you cannot read the screen. It uses the front camera to detect onlookers and can auto-activate based on location, working across notifications, floating windows, and split-screen views.
How is Xiaomi's privacy screen different from Samsung's?
Samsung's Privacy Display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra only guards the app you are actively using. Xiaomi's version works system-wide and adds location-based triggers, plus it ships on both the Pro and Pro Max rather than just one Ultra model.
What is the battery capacity of the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max?
The 18 Pro Max has an 8,500 mAh battery with 100W wired and 27W wireless charging. The standard 18 Pro has a 7,000 mAh battery with the same charging speeds.
Will the Xiaomi 18 Pro launch internationally?
Yes. Xiaomi has confirmed both the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will launch outside China later this year, a change from the Xiaomi 17 Pro which was never sold internationally.
How much does the Xiaomi 18 Pro cost?
China pricing starts at ¥5,999, roughly $900 USD. International pricing has not been announced yet.
