Does Tesla Roadside Assistance Cover Towing Cost? What You're Actually Covered For: Quick Guide

> **Quick Answer:** Yes, Tesla Roadside Assistance covers towing in most breakdown situations during your warranty period, with no mileage cap specified. Coverage is 24/7 and included with your vehicle warranty at no added cost. Once your warranty expires, you pay out of pocket unless you have third-party coverage. Flatbed towing only. Situations caused by accidents, collisions, or owner negligence are not covered.

## Does Tesla Roadside Assistance Actually Pay for My Tow?

Yes, Tesla pays for the tow if your vehicle breaks down due to a mechanical or software failure and the car is within its warranty period. You call Tesla Roadside Assistance directly through the Tesla app or the phone number listed in your owner's account, they dispatch a flatbed, and you are not handed a bill at the scene for covered incidents.

The key word is "covered." Tesla uses flatbed tow trucks because standard wheel-lift towing can damage the underbody and regenerative braking system on a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X. If a tow company shows up with a wheel-lift, refuse it and wait for the flatbed Tesla dispatches.

## What Situations Does Tesla's Coverage Actually Include?

Tesla covers towing when the car cannot be driven due to a vehicle defect, a 12V battery failure, a high-voltage battery issue, or a powertrain fault. It also covers situations where the car ran out of range, though that specific scenario has nuances: Tesla may send a mobile ranger with a temporary charge instead of a tow, and if that gets you moving, no tow is dispatched at all.

Situations that are not covered include collisions, vandalism, tire damage from road hazards, and anything the technician determines was caused by owner negligence or improper use. If you drove through a flooded road and the car died, expect a conversation about coverage before a free tow is confirmed.

If your car is out of warranty, coverage ends and you are responsible for the tow cost. A flatbed tow for a Tesla typically runs $150 to $300 for a local drop, and more for longer distances, since not every shop can accept an EV and the nearest Tesla Service Center may be 30 to 60 miles away.

## How Do I Actually Request a Tesla Tow?

Open the Tesla app, tap "Roadside Assistance" from the main menu, and follow the prompts. The app pulls your vehicle location automatically, which speeds up dispatch. If your phone is dead or the app is not working, the roadside number is available on Tesla's website under your account login.

Give them your VIN, your exact location, and a description of what the car is doing or not doing. Stay with the car if it is safe to do so. If you are on a highway shoulder, get behind the guardrail. For general safety while waiting for any tow, the same rules apply: hazard lights on, stay out of traffic lanes. ## What If Tesla's Coverage Does Not Apply to My Situation?

If Tesla denies coverage or your warranty is expired, you have a few fallback options. Your auto insurance policy may include roadside assistance with towing. Check whether you added that rider when you bought the policy. Companies like GEICO, Progressive, USAA, and others offer towing reimbursement up to a set dollar limit per incident. See [

AAA is another option, but confirm your membership tier before you rely on it. Basic AAA covers towing up to 5 miles, which may not be enough to reach a Tesla Service Center. If you have no coverage at all, you are looking at paying a private tow company directly. Get a price before the truck hooks up. Towing a Tesla requires a flatbed and typically costs more than a standard vehicle tow because of the weight and equipment requirements.

## Does Running Out of Battery Count as a Breakdown for Towing Purposes?

Tesla treats range depletion differently from a mechanical failure. They may dispatch a mobile technician to provide a temporary charge rather than a tow, and if that resolves the situation, no tow cost is involved. If the car cannot receive a charge for any reason, a flatbed tow to a charging location or service center is arranged and typically covered during the warranty period.

The practical takeaway: if you let the battery hit zero, Tesla will try to charge you roadside first. Plan for a longer wait than a standard breakdown call, sometimes two or more hours depending on your location and technician availability.

## Common Questions

**Q: Does Tesla roadside assistance have a mileage limit on towing?**
A: Tesla does not publish a hard mileage cap for towing during the warranty period. The car gets towed to the nearest Tesla Service Center or a location you specify, and Tesla covers the cost for covered incidents. Distance limits may apply in rare remote situations, but the company handles this case by case.

**Q: What happens when my Tesla warranty expires, am I on my own for towing?**
A: Yes, once the four-year basic vehicle warranty ends, Tesla Roadside Assistance coverage ends with it. You would need to rely on your auto insurance roadside rider, AAA, a credit card benefit, or pay out of pocket. A flatbed tow for an out-of-warranty Tesla typically costs $150 to $350 depending on distance.

**Q: Can any tow truck tow a Tesla, or does it have to be a specific type?**
A: It must be a flatbed. All four wheels need to be off the ground during transport. Wheel-lift or dolly towing can damage the motor, the underbody cooling lines, and the suspension. If someone shows up without a flatbed, do not let them hook up the car.

**Q: Does Tesla roadside assistance cover a dead 12V battery separate from the main high-voltage pack?**
A: Yes. The 12V auxiliary battery in a Tesla is a known failure point, and a dead 12V will prevent the car from unlocking, powering on, or driving even if the main battery pack is fully charged. Tesla Roadside covers this scenario during the warranty period, typically with a mobile technician visit.

**Q: Is Tesla Roadside Assistance available 24 hours a day?**
A: Yes, Tesla Roadside Assistance operates 24/7, every day of the year. Response times vary by location and time of day, but the service line is always reachable through the app or your account contact number.
