Why the Heat Persists: El Niño and the Ridge Pattern
The United States is currently under the influence of a pronounced ridge pattern—commonly called a heat dome—that traps warm air over large swaths of the continent. This ridge is being amplified by a strong, “supersized” El Niño that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicts will linger until at least February 2027.
El Niño’s signature is a warm pool of Pacific Ocean water that shifts atmospheric circulation eastward. In the current cycle, the warm pool is unusually extensive, feeding extra moisture and heat into the jet stream. The jet stream, in turn, adopts a more wavy configuration, allowing a high‑pressure ridge to settle over the Upper Midwest and the Deep South.
Key mechanisms:
- Enhanced subsidence: Downward air motion within the ridge compresses and heats the lower troposphere, raising surface temperatures.
- Reduced cloud cover: Subsidence clears the sky, increasing solar insolation during the day and limiting nighttime radiative cooling.
- Feedback loops: Warmer soils and oceans release additional heat, reinforcing the ridge.
The result is a September that feels more like late July, with many locations seeing 5‑10 °F (≈3‑6 °C) above climatological normals.
Record‑Breaking Temperatures: Data and Implications
Since the start of 2026, the United States has logged an unprecedented volume of temperature extremes:
- ~44,000 record daytime highs
- >53,000 record‑high overnight minimums
- ~21,500 low‑temperature records (roughly one cold record for every four heat records)

Regional Impacts: Water, Agriculture, and Energy
The lingering heat dome is more than a temperature story—it’s reshaping water availability, crop cycles, and power demand across the country.
- Western water basins: Snowpack in the Rockies remains 15‑20 % below average, limiting runoff into the Colorado River. Reservoirs such as Lake Mead are hovering at 38 % of capacity, intensifying the “water crisis” already highlighted by Molly Taft’s coverage of the Colorado River.
- Midwest agriculture: Corn and soybean planting windows have shifted northward by roughly 50 km. Early‑season heat stress is already reducing yields in Iowa and Illinois, according to a USDA preliminary report released on September 20.
- Energy grid strain: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that electricity demand for cooling has surged 12 % compared with the same period in 2025, pushing several utility companies to tap into emergency reserves.
Health Risks: Heat‑Related Illnesses on the Rise
The CDC’s 2026 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) notes a 27 % increase in emergency‑room visits for heat‑related conditions since June. Vulnerable populations—elderly, outdoor workers, and children—are especially at risk. Public‑health officials in Atlanta and St. Louis have opened cooling centers that operate 24 hours a day, a measure previously reserved for extreme heat waves only.
What Meteorologists Are Saying
“We’re looking at a classic ‘ridge‑and‑trough’ pattern amplified by an anomalously strong El Niño. The ridge is expected to persist through early October before a downstream trough finally nudges it eastward,”
— Dr. Lena Ortiz, senior forecaster, US Climate Prediction Center (CPC)
The CPC’s probabilistic outlook gives a 70 % chance that September’s average temperature will remain 5‑10 °F above normal across the Upper Midwest, Deep South, and parts of the Great Plains. The model ensemble also shows a 30 % chance of a late‑season cold snap in the Pacific Northwest, offering a brief respite for that region.
Looking Ahead: Forecasts Through Winter
The WMO’s El Niño advisory projects the warm Pacific anomaly to linger until February 2027, with sea‑surface temperatures staying 2‑3 °C above the long‑term average. This persistence suggests:
- December–January: Continued above‑average temperatures in the southern tier of the U.S., with occasional “cold‑air intrusions” that could spark severe winter storms in the Midwest.
- February: A gradual weakening of the ridge as the El Niño wanes, potentially allowing a more typical jet‑stream pattern to re‑establish itself.
Climate‑change attribution studies published in Nature Climate Change (July 2026) estimate that human‑induced warming has increased the odds of a “supersized” El Niño by roughly 15 %.
