Japan is set to launch a spacecraft on the world's first mission to collect samples from Phobos, one of Mars's two small moons. JAXA has confirmed that the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft will lift off aboard an H3 Launch Vehicle Flight No. 10 at 04:41:03 Japan Standard Time on October 20, 2026 (19:41:03 UTC on October 19, or 3:41 p.m. EDT on October 19) from the Yoshinobu Launch Complex at Tanegashima Space Center. The mission aims to return at least 10 grams of Phobos material to Earth in 2031.
Phobos is about 27 kilometers across at its widest point and orbits Mars at roughly 6,000 kilometers, circling the planet three times a day. Its smaller sibling, Deimos, is about 15 kilometers in diameter. Scientists have long debated whether these moons are captured asteroids or debris from a giant impact on Mars. MMX is designed to settle that question by returning pristine material to laboratories on Earth.
Previous attempts to explore Phobos have failed. Since the 1960s, dozens of missions have been sent to Mars, but its moons have largely remained a mystery. Multiple Russian attempts to land on Phobos, including one in 2011, ended in failure. JAXA's MMX aims to change that. The mission is planned to last about five years, with the spacecraft arriving at Mars in August 2027, orbiting Phobos from September 2027, and returning a capsule to Earth in 2031. That capsule is expected to land in Australia before being transferred to Japan.
MMX is a broad international effort. JAXA leads the mission with NASA, the French space agency CNES, the German Aerospace Center DLR, and the European Space Agency. The spacecraft has a three-module design: a 1,800-kilogram propulsion module, a 150-kilogram exploration and landing module, and a 1,050-kilogram return module. The total launch mass is 4,480 kilograms. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built the H3 rocket.
Key Facts
JAXA said on October 18, 2026, that the launch is set for October 20, 2026, at 04:41:03 JST, with a reserved launch period from October 21 to November 9, 2026. The agency will stream a pre-launch briefing on its YouTube channel. The H3 Flight 10, also known as H3-24L, is Japan's new mainstay rocket.
The European Space Agency reported on October 13, 2026, that MMX will be the first mission to collect a sample from Phobos and the first spacecraft to orbit the moon in a quasi-satellite orbit, a path needed because Phobos and Deimos lack the mass for conventional satellite orbits. The mission carries 11 science instruments, seven on the main spacecraft and four on the rover. The 25-kilogram Idefix rover, contributed by DLR and CNES, will land on Phobos in early 2029 and operate for 100 days. In the low gravity there, it would weigh the equivalent of just 15 grams.
NASA said on October 15, 2026, that it is contributing the MEGANE spectrograph, the Pneumatic Sampler (P-Sampler), and communications and navigation support from its Deep Space Network. MEGANE, which means eyeglasses in Japanese, will measure neutrons and gamma rays from Phobos to determine its elemental composition. The P-Sampler, mounted on a landing leg, collects ground samples using bursts of high-pressure nitrogen gas. Honeybee Robotics, a Blue Origin company, developed it under NASA's Discovery Program. NASA will obtain and curate about 15 percent of the returned sample at the Johnson Space Center Astromaterials Lab in Houston.
The German Aerospace Center announced on September 1, 2026, that Idefix will be the first lander ever to touch down on Phobos. DLR project leader Markus Grebenstein and CNES project leader Julien Baroukh said it will make history as the first rover ever to leave tracks on a moon of Mars. The launch window to Mars extends until November 7, 2026, according to DLR.
Analysis
MMX is not just another Mars mission. It combines robotic landing, surface sampling, and interplanetary trajectory planning in ways no previous mission has attempted. The H3 rocket is making its tenth flight, and success would cement Japan's new launch vehicle as a reliable option for deep-space science. The spacecraft's three-module architecture shows how much engineering goes into a mission that must travel to Mars, land on a tiny moon, and return a capsule to Earth.
What this really means is that the scientific payoff could be enormous. Phobos and Deimos are thought to be either captured asteroids or remnants of a giant impact on Mars. If MMX returns material from Phobos, laboratories worldwide can study it with instruments far more sensitive than any spacecraft can carry. NASA's curation of about 15 percent of the sample at the Johnson Space Center means American scientists will have direct access. European and Japanese teams will also share in the analysis, making this a global effort.
The mission also carries a technology demonstration that could shape future exploration. The P-Sampler uses bursts of nitrogen gas to lift surface material into a collection chamber, a different approach from the drills and scoops used on other missions. If it works, it could be adapted for future sample-return missions to asteroids, comets, or other small bodies. The Idefix rover will test mobility in extremely low gravity, where a 25-kilogram vehicle weighs just 15 grams. That experience will be valuable for any future mission to a small body.
The bigger picture here is that MMX positions Japan as a leader in planetary science. JAXA has already returned samples from asteroid Ryugu with Hayabusa2, and now it is aiming for a much more distant target. The collaboration with NASA, CNES, DLR, and ESA shows that major space agencies are willing to pool resources for ambitious science. The mission's success would also provide useful data for considering a Martian moon as a base for a future crewed mission to Mars, as JAXA project manager Yasuhiro Kawakatsu has suggested.
Why It Matters
Sample return is the gold standard for planetary science. Remote sensing and rovers can tell us a lot, but bringing material back to Earth allows scientists to use the full power of laboratory instruments, including those too large or too delicate to fly in space. The 10 grams of Phobos material that MMX aims to return may not sound like much, but it would be the first sample ever obtained from a moon of Mars. Hayabusa2 returned about 5 grams from Ryugu, and every gram from Phobos will be precious.
The mission also addresses one of the most fundamental questions about the solar system: how did the moons of Mars form? The two leading theories, capture of asteroids or formation from a giant impact, have very different implications for the early history of the solar system. If Phobos formed from debris of a giant impact, that would mean Mars was hit by a large body early in its history. If it is a captured asteroid, it would tell us about the population of small bodies in the early solar system. Either way, the answer will reshape our understanding of planetary evolution.
There is also a practical dimension. Phobos orbits Mars at about 6,000 kilometers, completing three orbits per day. That close proximity makes it a potential stepping stone for human exploration of Mars. A base on Phobos could serve as a staging point, a place to teleoperate robots on the Martian surface, or even a source of resources. Kawakatsu's comment that Martian moons are 'the most important unclimbed mountains in the solar system' captures both the scientific and strategic value of these small worlds.
Next Up
If the launch goes ahead as planned on October 20, 2026, MMX will begin a five-year journey. The spacecraft will arrive at Mars in August 2027, enter orbit around Phobos in September 2027, and then study the moon from a quasi-satellite orbit. In early 2029, it will release the Idefix rover, which will operate for 100 days. The main spacecraft is scheduled to land on Phobos in 2030 to collect samples, and the return module will bring the capsule back to Earth in 2031. NASA's MEGANE instrument will operate throughout the orbital phase, mapping the elemental composition of the surface.
JAXA has reserved a launch window from October 21 to November 9, 2026, in case of weather or technical delays. The agency will stream a pre-launch briefing on YouTube, and the launch itself will be carried live. If MMX succeeds, it will be the first mission to return samples from a moon other than Earth's, and the first to bring back material from the Mars system. The world will be watching Tanegashima on October 20.
