It's 11 PM. The living room ceiling light goes click and dies. Your first guess: the bulb. But it's an LED fixture — no filament to check, no bulb to swap. Next morning a repair tech glances at it and says: "LED chips are burned out, not repairable, you need a whole new fixture." Quote: $95 (¥680).
Slow down. There's an open secret in the lighting repair trade: more than 70% of "dead" LED fixtures are not LED chip failures at all — it's the LED driver, the little white box hidden behind the light panel. Replacing it costs a few dollars in parts. The rest is labor markup and, sometimes, upselling.
Why the driver fails first
LED chips are rated for 50,000 hours. But the electrolytic capacitors inside the driver are the weakest link in the whole fixture: heat accelerates aging, humid summers cause moisture-related shorts, and thunderstorm-season voltage surges can punch through them. Peak season for dead lights is right after summer and rainy season — and in my experience running an LED driver business, seven out of ten returned "dead" fixtures have a failed driver, not failed chips.
Think of it this way: the chips are the bulb; the driver is the heart. If the heart stops, brand-new chips light nothing.
The 5-minute, 3-step diagnosis
Kill the wall switch (flip the breaker if you can), get a ladder, and open the diffuser:
Step 1 — Inspect the LED chips. Look at each chip on the board. A burned-out chip has a pinprick-sized black dot in the center, or the whole package turns dark/yellowish. One or two dead dots usually means a chip shorted and dragged down its series string — not a total loss.
Step 2 — Inspect the driver. Find that white or gray rectangular box behind the panel. Look for bulging, yellowing, or scorch marks; smell for burnt odor. If it looks fine, power it on briefly: a "zzt" sound then darkness, or a case that's hot to the touch, is a death sentence for the driver.
Step 3 — (Optional) Measure the output. With a multimeter, check the driver's DC output — commonly 12V/24V/36V. No output = driver dead. Output present but no light = chips or board wiring.
Symptom → cause cheat sheet
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Totally dead; driver bulged / smells burnt | Driver burned out | Replace driver |
| One full row dark, other rows lit | One chip open in a series string | Jumper as a stopgap, or replace board |
| Chips glow faintly / flicker | Unstable driver output | Replace driver |
| Light turns on seconds after switch-on | Aging driver capacitors | Replace driver soon |
| Intermittent; works when you tap it | Loose terminal | Tighten wiring (free!) |
| Remote dead but light works | Remote / channel controller | Battery or controller swap |
One rule to remember: bulge, odor, or noise → driver. Black dots on chips → chips. Both clean → check the wiring terminals.
The price table that protects you
| Repair item | Typical price (CN market) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis visit | ¥30–50 (~$5) | Usually credited toward repair |
| LED driver replacement | ¥80–180 (~$12–25) | Parts included |
| Single chip replacement | ¥15–30 | 5+ dead chips → replace the whole board |
| DIY magnetic replacement board | ¥20–40 | Snaps in, three wires |
| Full fixture replacement | ¥300–800 | Only if the housing is damaged |
The classic scam: a failed driver gets misdiagnosed as "all chips burned," and you're quoted several hundred yuan for a "new fixture" that's actually a no-name replacement. Counter-move: ask the tech to point at the burned chip. Burned chips have visible black dots. If he can't point, walk away.
Replacing the driver yourself: match 3 parameters
A compatible driver costs ¥15–50 online, and installation is literally three wires. But match these or you'll kill your new driver or age the chips fast:
- Output current/voltage identical to the old label (e.g. 300mA±5% or 24V). When in doubt, go lower current, never higher — overcurrent accelerates lumen decay.
- Output power ≥ the board's power, but just slightly above — bigger isn't better.
- CCC certification (China's mandatory safety mark) — uncertified no-name drivers are a fire and shock risk. Also check the physical size fits the driver compartment.
When buying new, audit the driver
Flip this whole article around when shopping for a new fixture: ask what driver it uses and how long the driver warranty lasts. The driver is the fixture's lifespan bottleneck. A driver with overcurrent/short-circuit protection and name-brand capacitors buys you years of extra life — and lets you swap the part instead of scrapping the fixture.
A dead light isn't scary. What's scary is paying ¥680 for a problem that costs ¥80 to fix. Spend five minutes with these three steps first.
