Last week a customer brought two downlights into our workshop: one bought online, one from a dealer. Same trim, same cutout, same look. He asked whether he had overpaid.
I took both apart. The online unit was lighter, its cooling fins shallower and two fewer. Inside the driver, the capacitors were smaller and there was no PFC stage. The model suffixes differed by two letters.
"It's the same lamp, isn't it?"
It isn't. Same shell, two products.
Why the model numbers never match
A single SKU sold through both channels turns every store into a free showroom: customers handle the product, then order online. The usual fix is channel-specific suffixes — same tooling, same appearance, different model number. The numbers are not interchangeable, and neither are the datasheets. Search the dealer model online and you find nothing; dealers don't stock the online one. You think you are comparing one product. You are comparing two.
Where the six cost positions get cut
A luminaire's cost breaks into six positions. A low-priced exclusive usually cuts two or three, not all six.
| Position | Common practice online | Consequence | How to spot it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light source | LED bins one grade lower | Lower flux at the same wattage; batch tint shift | Light several units side by side |
| Driver | Cheaper capacitors, lower temperature rating, PFC and surge/overcurrent protection removed | Deeper flicker, shorter life, storm-season failures | Read the label; phone-camera test |
| Housing and thermal | Stamped steel instead of extruded or die-cast aluminum, thinner wall, fewer fins | Higher junction temperature, faster depreciation | Weigh it; count the fins |
| Optics | Thinner lens, reflector, or acrylic diffuser | Uneven beam; diffuser deforms under finger pressure | Press gently; inspect the beam edge |
| Mechanical | Thinner clips, smaller terminals, thinner wire | Poor retention; hot contacts over time | Inspect terminals; tug the wire |
| Certification and warranty | Certificate under the contract manufacturer; warranty run by the marketplace | Return-only service, long turnaround | Ask who performs the warranty |
A public example: two same-size downlights, the online traffic model rated 24W, the dealer model 38W. The lower wattage is not efficiency. With the same housing and heat-dissipating area, a higher rating would push junction temperature past the available margin. These units also tend to have simpler construction, more plastic-feeling diffusers, and weaker sealing.
Not every online model is built this way. Some low-priced exclusives are outsourced, with aluminum PCB thickness or driver components downgraded.
Why "gray in two months" happens
A dealer told me about a customer who bought a batch online. The apartment looked bright on day one. In under two months the living room looked gray — not dirty, more like a film of dust. He tore it all out.
The cause is junction temperature. Lumen output declines with time; that is normal, but the rate depends strongly on temperature. A common industry estimate: every 10°C rise in junction temperature accelerates depreciation by roughly 15%. That is an estimate, not a mandatory standard, but the direction is established.
Thin thermal margin does not show at first. Summer heat, an insulated ceiling void, five hours of operation — junction temperature sits high all evening. By the time the room looks dim, the loss is not reversible. Tint differences across a batch usually mean loose binning or mixed lots.
Seven checks in five minutes at goods-in
- Weigh it and check wall thickness. At the same cutout, the lighter unit usually has a thinner housing and fewer fins. Count them.
- Read the driver label. Model, input and output parameters, certificate number. Blurry print or a blank certificate field is a reason to ask.
- Point a phone camera at it. With the lamp on, look for rolling horizontal bands — stronger bands mean deeper flicker. Not a lab measurement, but a reliable first screen.
- Run it for 30 minutes and touch the housing. If you can rest your hand on it, margin is probably reasonable. If you can only touch it briefly, it runs hot.
- Listen to the driver. In a quiet room, close to the fixture, listen for a high-pitched whine. If there is one, the driver has a problem.
- Match the model and certificate. The box suffix should match the product page, and the certificate number should be verifiable. One letter is a different product.
- Power the batch side by side. Step back and compare tint, looking for green or pink casts and brightness differences.
Four questions to ask before you order
Don't ask "is the quality good?" Ask specifics.
- What driver model, and what are the input/output parameters and certificate number?
- Which gateway does it use? Is it the same ecosystem as my existing protocol?
- How long is the warranty, and who performs it — store, brand, or contract manufacturer?
- Housing process: stamped steel, extruded, or die-cast? Fin count and diffuser thickness?
For smart fixtures, question two matters most: online lines and dealer Pro lines often run different gateway and firmware ecosystems. Service splits the same way — marketplace returns versus a distributor who can send someone out. The warranty period may be identical; the delivery is not.
What this means in practice
For a hotel floor or office fit-out, the risk is a maintenance liability: repeated failures, inconsistent color across rooms, no one accountable for the installed base.
Specify at the component level and verify at goods-in: driver model and certificate number before the order, one unit checked on arrival, the batch side by side under power.
I am not arguing for the more expensive fixture. I work on the driver side and have seen enough lamps with a beautiful shell and a capacitor that decides how they look two years later. But know where the money went. Savings on a diffuser you can feel; savings on a driver you discover later. Five minutes of questions, five minutes of checks — worth more than the difference.
