Container tomatoes turn balconies, patios, and sunny windowsills into productive gardens. With the right setup, you can harvest sweet, vine-ripened fruit without a single square foot of in-ground space.
Choosing the Right Container and Soil
Pick a pot at least 18 inches wide and deep—five gallons minimum per plant. Drainage holes are non-negotiable. Fill with a light, moisture-retentive mix: equal parts peat moss or coconut coir, compost, and perlite. Skip garden soil; it compacts and carries disease.
Sunlight, Watering, and Feeding
Tomatoes need 6–8 hours of direct sun. Water deeply whenever the top inch of mix feels dry; containers dry faster than beds. Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer, switching to high-potassium once fruit sets.
Support and Pruning
Install a stake or cage at planting to avoid root disturbance. Pinch off suckers below the first flower cluster to direct energy to fruit. Determinate varieties stay bushy; indeterminate vines need taller supports and ongoing pruning.
Consistent care beats perfection—mulch the surface, scout daily for pests, and harvest promptly to keep plants producing. For more gardening tips, visit chiyapuri.
