I killed my first loropetalum in under a year. I bought it for the purple leaves, stuck it in a shady corner by the fence, and watered it every day like a houseplant. By midsummer the leaves had turned a sad green, and by fall the stems were mushy at the base.
Since then I have learned that this shrub wants less than you would think. Zoned Garden has a detailed guide on Loropetalum care that covers sun, soil, pruning, and winter tips by zone, and it comes from a horticulture specialist with over a decade of hands-on work in residential gardens. Here is the short version of what I wish I had known on day one.
*Give it real sun
*
Loropetalum needs at least four hours of direct sun a day. Morning sun with some afternoon shade is the sweet spot, especially if your summers regularly pass 95°F. In cooler zones it handles full sun just fine.
Too little light shows up fast. The purple or burgundy leaves drift toward green, and the flowers get thin. I moved my second plant to a spot with strong morning light, and the color came back within one growing season.
*Check your soil pH
*
This is the step most people skip. The shrub likes acidic soil with a pH between 4.0 and 6.5. Above that range, it cannot take up iron, and the leaves turn yellow while the veins stay green.
A home test kit costs a few dollars and takes five minutes. If your soil reads too high, work elemental sulfur into the top few inches and test again later. Retest every couple of years, because pH tends to creep up over time.
*Plant it at the right depth
*
Dig a hole two to three times as wide as the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball itself. The top of the root ball should sit level with the ground or a little above it. Burying the crown is one of the quickest ways to cause stem rot.
Fill the hole back in with the soil you dug out. Skip the potting mix, because roots tend to circle inside a soft, rich pocket instead of spreading out. Then add two to three inches of mulch, and keep it a few inches away from the stem.
*Water deep, not often
*
For the first two or three months, soak the root zone two or three times a week. After the plant settles in, once a week is plenty, and less if it rains. An established shrub in the ground only needs help during long dry spells.
Overwatering is the real killer here, and it is what got my first plant. Push a finger two inches into the soil. If it still feels damp, wait. Potted plants dry out faster, so check them every couple of days in summer.
*Feed it gently
*
Use a slow-release fertilizer made for acid-loving plants, the kind sold for azaleas and hollies. Feed every two months from spring through fall, and stop completely in winter. Spread the granules around the drip line, which is the outer edge of the branches, not against the trunk.
Go easy on nitrogen. Too much of it gives you lots of leaves and fewer flowers. A balanced formula keeps both the color and the blooms in good shape.
*Prune at the right time
*
The shrub sets its flower buds on last year’s wood. That means you should wait until the spring bloom is completely finished before you cut anything. Tip-prune by about a quarter to keep the shape tidy and the branching dense.
If yours has gotten out of hand, cut all the stems back by about a third in late winter, before new growth starts. It will bounce back and bloom the next spring. Avoid pruning in fall, since soft new growth rarely hardens off before the cold arrives.
*Protect it in cold zones
*
Loropetalum is hardy in USDA zones 7b through 9b. In zone 7, spread three to four inches of pine bark mulch over the roots before the first hard freeze. If temperatures could drop below 0°F, wrap the shrub loosely in burlap and take it off once nights stay above freezing.
In zone 6 and colder, grow it in a container. Bring the pot inside before the first frost, and keep it in bright light until spring.
*Three quick fixes
*
Leaves turning green. This usually means too little sun or soil pH that is too high. Move the plant or prune back nearby branches, then test your soil.
No spring flowers. Most of the time the shrub got pruned in fall or winter, and the buds were cut off with the branches. Fix your timing and the blooms return the next year.
Webbing or sticky new growth. Those are likely spider mites or aphids. Hit them with a strong spray from the hose, and if they come back, use neem oil in the evening so the leaves do not burn.
*The takeaway
*
Give the shrub sunlight, acidic soil, and deep but infrequent water, and then mostly leave it alone. Prune right after it blooms, and feed it lightly through the growing season. My second plant has outgrown its spot twice now, which is a nice problem to have.
