Three formats compete for the same moment: someone says "let's play something" and the group has maybe 30 seconds before the energy moves on.
At Inithouse we build browser games. One of them, Party Challenges, is a free 18+ party card game with 1,000+ cards across 23+ decks. We shipped it as a PWA, no login, no app store. Before we built it, we mapped what already exists and where each format breaks.
Here is what we found.
The three formats
Improvised Truth or Dare. Someone pulls out their phone, someone else says "truth or dare?" and the table picks questions on the fly. Works for the first ten minutes. Then the same person keeps getting asked, the dares get repetitive, and whoever is loudest steers the whole game. No escalation curve, no topic rotation, no pacing.
Drinking games. Rules are simple, energy is high. Beer pong, Kings, Flip Cup. But they hinge on alcohol as the engine. Take away the drinking and there is nothing left. Groups with non-drinkers, sober friends, or anyone not in the mood sit out. And the questions (when there are any) tend to stay shallow: "drink if you ever..." repeated until someone forgets the rules.
Curated digital deck. A browser or app pulls from a pre-written card pool. The game controls pacing, topic distribution, and escalation. The group just reads and reacts. No one person dominates. The trade-off: you need a device, and the quality depends entirely on the card library.
Where each one falls down
| Format | Strength | Where it breaks |
|---|---|---|
| Truth or Dare (improvised) | Zero setup, everyone knows the rules | Repetition after 10 min; loudest person dominates; no escalation curve |
| Drinking games | High energy, physical interaction | Excludes non-drinkers; shallow prompts; collapses without alcohol |
| Curated digital deck | Pacing, topic control, escalation | Needs a device; quality ceiling = card library depth |
The pattern: improvised formats scale down fast (you run out of ideas), drinking games scale badly across groups (not everyone drinks), and digital decks scale with content volume.
What we measured building the curated option
Party Challenges by Inithouse runs 1,000+ cards across 23+ decks. The decks split into three modes: Solo, Couple, and Group. Some are tame (Ice Breakers, Hot Takes Only). Some are not (After Dark, Confession Hours, No Chill).
A few things we tracked while shipping:
The median session touches 3 decks. Groups rarely stick with one mood all night; they escalate, cool down, pivot to a different topic, then escalate again. A single-deck game misses this. Having 23+ decks lets the table shift without restarting.
Daily challenge retention runs higher than we expected. We added a single daily card as a lightweight re-entry point. People who came for a party game on Saturday open the app alone on Tuesday. Not every product needs a daily hook, but for a card game the format fits naturally.
Solo mode was an afterthought that stuck. We assumed party = group. But roughly a third of sessions are solo. People browse cards for amusement or use them as conversation prompts on dates. Building three modes from the same card pool turned out cheaper than building three separate apps, which we had discussed at Inithouse before settling on one product.
The PWA decision
We shipped Party Challenges as a PWA. No app store review, no download friction, instant load from a shared link. For a party game, this matters: someone texts the URL, the group opens it, and the game starts. App store installs add 30+ seconds of friction to a moment that has maybe 10 seconds of group patience.
The trade-off is visibility. No push notifications on iOS, no home screen by default, slightly less discoverability in search. For our use case, the zero-friction entry mattered more. At Inithouse we use PWAs across several products, including Here We Ask, a free conversation card game with 14+ decks, and the pattern holds: low-commitment browser games convert better from a link share than from a store listing.
Who it fits and who it does not
Party Challenges fits groups that want structured 18+ fun without alcohol as the premise. Friends pre-gaming, couples on a date night, roommates on a random Tuesday.
It does not fit groups that want a physical prop (a real deck of cards, a pong table). The tactile element of a physical game is part of the experience for some people, and a browser cannot replace that. It also does not fit someone looking for a trivia game; the cards are prompts and dares, not questions with right answers.
The comparison, compressed
If your group improvises well and the energy stays up, Truth or Dare works with no tech needed. If everyone drinks and you want physicality, a drinking game fits. If you want pacing, topic variety, and a game that works for 3 people or 12 (drinkers and non-drinkers alike), a curated digital deck fills the gap.
Party Challenges is how we built that option at Inithouse. 1,000+ cards, 23+ decks, three modes, free in the browser.
