When I started in this field, I quietly believed there would come a point where I had learned enough. I would master the stack, accumulate enough hard-won knowledge, and then coast on that expertise while the world stayed roughly still around me. Every few years the world has cheerfully corrected that belief. The servers I once racked by hand became someone else's cloud. The scripts I was proud of became declarative config. The deep knowledge I built about one platform became a footnote when the platform stopped mattering. I kept arriving at the summit only to find the mountain had moved.
For a long time this felt like a threat, a treadmill I resented being on. The skills I sweated to acquire kept depreciating, and the newcomers arriving with fresh knowledge of whatever was current made my expensive experience look suddenly cheap. I have made a kind of peace with it since, because I finally understood that the churn is not an interruption of the work. In this field, the churn is the work. The half-life of any specific tool keeps shrinking, and pretending otherwise just means being blindsided on a slightly longer delay.
What I have also learned, though, is what does not depreciate. The specific tools evaporate constantly, but the reasoning underneath them ages far more slowly. Understanding why a system fails under load, how trust actually flows through it, what makes a change safe or dangerous, those instincts carry from one generation of technology to the next. The engineer who memorized commands has to start over each cycle. The one who understood principles just learns a new dialect for ideas they already hold. AI is only sharpening this divide, commoditizing the surface knowledge while making deep judgment more valuable, not less.
So I have stopped measuring myself by how much I currently know and started measuring how quickly I can learn the next thing. The most durable professionals I know are not the ones with the most facts in their heads. They are the ones who have made a habit of being a beginner again, who can pick up an unfamiliar system without ego and get productive fast, over and over, without treating each reset as a personal insult.
The future of this job does not belong to whoever knows the most today. It belongs to whoever can keep relearning without resentment, because the one skill that never goes obsolete is the ability to become a beginner again on purpose.
