For most of my career, writing code was the bottleneck. Getting a working script, a config, a service out of your head and into a form the machine would run took real effort, and that effort was where a lot of the value lived. AI has quietly moved that bottleneck. Generating a plausible first draft of almost anything is now nearly free. What has not gotten easier, and has arguably gotten harder, is knowing whether the plausible thing in front of you is actually correct, safe, and appropriate for your system. The scarce skill is shifting from producing code to judging it.
This is a bigger change than it sounds, because our whole idea of seniority was built around production. The senior person was the one who could write the tricky thing. But when a junior with a good AI assistant can generate the same tricky thing in seconds, the differentiator is no longer who can produce it. It is who can look at the generated output and see what is wrong with it, the subtle security hole, the assumption that does not hold in this environment, the pattern that works fine in a tutorial and falls apart under real load. Reading critically becomes the rare and valuable act.
I already feel this shift in my own work. I spend far less time typing and far more time reviewing, and the review is harder than the typing ever was, because AI-generated code is fluent, confident, and plausible even when it is wrong. It does not have the tells that junior human code has. It looks like something a competent engineer wrote, which means the flaws hide in output that carries an unearned air of authority. Catching them requires understanding the problem deeply enough to know what the confident answer is quietly getting wrong.
So the advice I give people entering the field is changing. Learning to produce code fluently still matters, but it is no longer the moat it was. What will keep you valuable is the ability to read code you did not write, understand systems deeply enough to spot when a plausible solution is subtly dangerous, and take responsibility for what actually ships. Generation is becoming a commodity. Judgment is not.
The future does not belong to whoever can write the most code. It belongs to whoever can tell good code from convincing code, when the machine can produce oceans of the second kind.
