Reusable baby wipes are cheaper over time and produce less landfill waste, but disposables are more practical for nappy changes on the go, in public, and during the newborn phase when you're doing fifteen changes a day on four hours of sleep. Neither is the right answer for every family — the honest version is that most parents end up using both, in different situations, for different reasons.
What's the actual difference between reusable and disposable wipes?
Reusable wipes are typically squares of cotton, bamboo fleece or muslin fabric — you wet them yourself, use them, then wash and reuse. A starter kit might cost £15–30 and last years. Disposable wipes come pre-moistened in a pack, you use them once and bin them.
The practical gap is bigger than it sounds. Reusables need a wet bag, a water source, and a washing routine. Disposables need a bin. When you're at home with a changing station set up, reusables are genuinely fine. When you're in a Pret toilet with a wriggly eight-month-old and three minutes before your train, disposables win by a mile.
One thing worth knowing: not all disposables are made equally. Most conventional disposables contain synthetic fibres — polyester, polypropylene — that don't biodegrade and, if flushed, contribute to the fatberg problem and microplastic pollution. From October 2027, the UK is banning the sale of wet wipes containing plastic fibres entirely. Disposable cotton wipes (like dinky sensitive) sidestep this — 100% cotton, nothing synthetic, nothing to ban.
Are reusable wipes actually more eco-friendly?
Usually yes — but with caveats.
A disposable wipe made from synthetic fibres takes decades to break down in landfill. A cotton reusable wipe, washed and reused 200 times, has a substantially lower lifetime footprint. On this, reusables win clearly.
But the calculation shifts when you factor in:
- Water and energy for washing. Hot washes, tumble drying and frequent loads add up. A cold wash, line-dried is much better than a hot wash tumble-dried.
- What the disposable is made of. A 100% cotton disposable is biodegradable in a way that a polyester-blend disposable is not. It still creates waste, but it's not the same as a plastic-fibre wipe sitting in landfill for decades.
- How many you get through. If reusables mean you need fewer disposables (rather than zero), the maths still works out better than full disposable use.
The honest answer: reusables are greener in principle, but a plastic-free disposable wipe is significantly less damaging than a conventional synthetic-fibre one. If you're not ready to go fully reusable, switching to cotton disposables is a genuine, meaningful step — not a greenwash consolation prize.
Which is better for sensitive or newborn skin?
For newborns especially, the safest advice from midwives and health visitors has long been: plain water on cotton wool, at least for the first few weeks. That's essentially a reusable approach — warm water, soft cotton squares.
As babies get older, both reusable and disposable wipes can work well for sensitive skin, as long as you pick the right ones. The things that tend to cause reactions are:
- Fragrance (parfum) — the number one irritant in wipes, listed under a dozen different names
- Preservatives like phenoxyethanol and EDTA — common in disposable wipes
- Synthetic fibres — can cause friction irritation on very sensitive or eczema-prone skin
For reusables, the wipe itself is usually just fabric — the irritant risk is whatever solution you wet them with (plain water is always safest). For disposables, you want fragrance free, preservative-free, and ideally cotton-based.
If your baby has a known skin condition like eczema, see your GP or health visitor before switching wipes — they can advise on what's appropriate for your child specifically. General guidance is useful, but it's not a substitute for medical advice on individual skin.
How do the costs actually compare?
Let's be concrete about this.
A typical reusable starter kit — 20–25 wipe squares and a wet bag — costs roughly £15–30. You'll need a bit of detergent per wash, but the marginal cost per wipe, over time, approaches zero.
Disposable wipes vary enormously. Supermarket own-brand packs can be 1–2p per wipe; premium brands run to 5–8p. If you're doing 8–10 wipes a day in the newborn phase, that's £2–5 a week on disposables alone.
Over a year, the cost difference is real — reusables can save £100–200 compared to full disposable use. But many parents find a hybrid approach works well: reusables at home, disposables for the changing bag. At that point the savings are smaller but still meaningful, and the practicality is much higher.
What about hygiene — are reusables actually clean enough?
This is the question parents most often ask, and the short answer is yes — washed properly, reusable wipes are perfectly hygienic.
The key points:
- Wash at 60°C if your baby has been unwell, or if the wipes have been used for nappy changes involving diarrhoea
- For general nappy changes, 40°C with a good detergent is usually sufficient
- Don't leave wet/soiled wipes sitting in a wet bag for more than a day or two — bacteria multiply quickly in warm, damp conditions
- Replace worn or pilled wipes — degraded fabric cleans less effectively
If you're using disposables for on-the-go hygiene — wiping hands, faces, unexpected spills — the hygiene argument for reusables weakens. You're not going to carry a wet bag on a day out for used hand-wipe squares. That's where a pocket-sized pack of disposable wipes earns its place.
Can you use disposable wipes and still be eco-conscious?
Yes — especially if you're choosing the right ones. The environmental impact of disposable wipes is almost entirely down to what they're made of.
A wipe made from 100% cotton, with no synthetic fibres, no PLA (which is a plastic, whatever the label implies), and no plastic packaging, is a fundamentally different object from a conventional wet wipe. Cotton biodegrades. Polyester doesn't. That difference matters more than the disposable vs reusable binary.
dinky sensitive wipes are 100% cotton, fragrance free, plastic fibre free — including no PLA — and they come in a pocket-sized pack that fits in a changing bag without taking up the entire front pocket. They're not a replacement for going fully reusable if that's your goal, but they're a genuinely plastic-free disposable option for when you need one.
The UK's 2027 wet wipe ban is specifically targeting plastic-fibre wipes — cotton disposables are already compliant. If you want to understand exactly what's changing and why, the UK wet wipe ban post covers it clearly.
Which should you actually choose?
Here's a practical breakdown by situation:
Reusables work well when:
- You're at home with a proper changing setup
- You have a washing routine you can stick to
- You're committed to reducing disposable waste long-term
- Your baby doesn't have specific skin needs requiring dermatologist input
Disposables work better when:
- You're out of the house (changing bag, travel, festivals, long journeys)
- You're in the newborn phase and just need to get through the day
- You need hygiene wipes for hands and faces, not just nappy changes
- You're in a household where the extra washing isn't manageable right now
Hybrid approach (what most parents actually do):
- Reusables at home for nappy changes
- Plastic-free disposables in the changing bag
- Separate antibacterial or sensitive wipes for hands and faces on the go
There's no medal for going 100% reusable and burning yourself out in the process. Good enough, consistently, is better than perfect, occasionally.

Common questions
Are reusable baby wipes better for sensitive skin?
They can be — because the wipe itself is just fabric wetted with plain water, removing most of the irritants (fragrance, preservatives) found in disposables. But disposable cotton wipes that are fragrance free and preservative free are also gentle on sensitive skin. The fabric and the solution matter more than the reusable/disposable label.
Are reusable baby wipes hygienic?
Yes, when washed properly. Wash at 40–60°C with detergent, don't leave soiled wipes sitting damp for more than a day, and replace worn-out squares. They're no less hygienic than reusable cloth nappies, which many families use without issue.
Can disposable wipes be eco-friendly?
It depends entirely on what they're made of. Disposable wipes made from 100% cotton biodegrade; those made from synthetic fibres (polyester, polypropylene) do not. Choosing plastic-free cotton disposables is a meaningful environmental choice — not the same as going fully reusable, but a genuine step down from conventional synthetic wipes.
