What Games Actually Train: 3 Lessons From 133 Studies and a Teamwork Experiment

The useful answer to “Are video games good for you?” is not yes or no.

It is: which mechanic, which player, and which outcome are we measuring?

A 2026 systematic review gives us a better starting point than the usual culture-war framing. It pooled 133 studies, 269 effect sizes, and 14,245 participants to examine how video-game play relates to cognitive ability.

The result is positive—but modest. That combination is more interesting than a sweeping promise.

1. The average effect is real, but small

The review found statistically significant associations across memory, spatial ability, visual attention, cognitive control, and intelligence. It combined correlational studies, gamer-versus-non-gamer comparisons, and controlled trials.

The controlled-trial evidence matters most for causal claims, and it showed the smallest effect. Most included studies were rated medium quality, and the authors still point to gaps around long-term outcomes and the direction of causality.

So the defensible claim is not “gaming makes everyone smarter.” It is:

Some game experiences repeatedly exercise cognitive systems, and the overall pattern of evidence suggests small benefits in several domains.

That is useful without pretending the science is finished.

2. Mechanics matter more than the word “game”

A route-planning puzzle, an action game, a resource-management simulation, and a cooperative raid are different practice environments.

They can demand different combinations of:

visual attention and target selection
working memory and spatial mapping
rapid decisions under uncertainty
prioritization and resource allocation
communication and role coordination

This is why genre-level arguments often feel too blunt. The thing doing the training is usually closer to the mechanic than the store-page label.

A 2023 meta-analysis of 63 video-game training studies made a similar point: gameplay features were more informative than broad genre buckets when explaining cognitive transfer. The practical question is not “Is this a game?” It is “What does the player have to notice, remember, predict, coordinate, or adapt to keep progressing?”

3. Teamwork can improve, but transfer needs scaffolding

The social case is promising and more conditional.

A 2025 experiment with 90 university students used a cooperative MOBA in which participants had defined team roles. After the intervention, the students showed improvements in recognizing teammates’ strengths and weaknesses, lower reported lack of trust, and stronger orientation toward shared goals.

That does not mean every multiplayer session is a team-building exercise. The task design, role clarity, and reflection around the activity matter.

A separate 2025 study with 110 students tested a competitive sandbox gaming environment against a non-game training condition. Collaboration improved on a near task, but creativity, critical thinking, and communication did not automatically generalize across every near and far context.

The researchers identified a useful pattern: mentorship, collaborative problem-solving, autonomy, and guided checklists helped transfer. Unfamiliar rules, limited practice, and a lack of structured support worked against it.

The lesson is bigger than gaming. Practice transfers better when the target skill is explicit and the bridge to the next context is designed.

A practical way to play with intent

If you want to test what a game is training, try this four-step loop:

Name the skill. For example: prioritization under pressure.
Name the mechanic. Resource scarcity, simultaneous objectives, or role coordination.
Play deliberately. Notice the decisions rather than treating the session as an undifferentiated block of time.
Test a nearby task. Use a short team exercise, planning problem, or reflection—not a vague feeling that you are “better now.”

“I played for three hours” is a duration.

“I practiced scanning competing signals, then checked whether I prioritized a real task more clearly” is a hypothesis.

That is the frame I find most useful: games are not a generic brain supplement. They are a library of practice environments. Their value depends on the mechanics, the player’s intent, the surrounding context, and whether we measure transfer honestly.
