Car Smoking Under Hood on Side of Road: What to Do Right Now: What To Do Next

> **Quick Answer:** Pull as far off the road as you can, shut the engine off immediately, and get everyone out of the car and away from traffic. Do not open the hood. White or gray smoke usually means coolant; blue smoke means oil; both are serious. Call for a tow. Do not try to drive it. Starting a hot, smoking engine again can destroy it in minutes.

## Should I Stay in the Car or Get Out?

Get out, and get away from the vehicle. Once you are fully off the road with the engine off, exit through the passenger side away from traffic, take your passengers, and move at least 50 feet behind the car along the shoulder. If you are on a highway with no shoulder, stay in the car with your seatbelt on until it is safe to exit. Smoke does not always mean fire, but you cannot know that immediately, and staying near a smoking engine is not worth the risk.

Turn on your hazard lights the moment you feel something is wrong, before you even finish pulling over. If you have road flares or reflective triangles, set them out behind the vehicle once you are safely clear. [Emergency triangles vs. flares](/emergency-triangle-vs-flares-which-is-safer-on-highway/) have different uses depending on your situation, but either is better than nothing.

## What Is Causing the Smoke and Is It Going to Catch Fire?

The color tells you a lot. White or steam-like smoke from the hood almost always means coolant is burning off, either from a burst radiator hose, a leaking coolant reservoir, or a blown head gasket. That steam is hot and can cause serious burns, but it is not the same as fire. Blue or grayish smoke with an oily smell means engine oil is contacting a hot surface, which is more likely to eventually ignite. Black smoke is less common from under the hood and usually points to fuel or an electrical issue.

A blown head gasket is one of the most common causes of sudden heavy steam on the roadside. You may also see the temperature gauge pegged at maximum or the coolant warning light on. Either way, the engine is in distress. Running it further, even for a few blocks, risks warping the cylinder head or seizing the engine entirely. If you are not sure what happened right before the smoke started, check whether your engine light was flashing before you pulled over. ## Do I Need a Tow or Can I Wait for It to Cool Down and Drive?

You need a tow. Letting the engine cool for 30 minutes is not the same as fixing whatever caused the smoke. If a hose burst, it is still burst. If the head gasket is blown, it is still blown. Driving a car that just smoked heavily is how a $400 hose repair becomes a $4,000 engine replacement.

The only exception is if you can visually confirm the smoke was from something minor and completely external, like a plastic bag melting on the exhaust or a small amount of coolant that dripped onto a hot engine block from a loose cap you immediately tightened. If you cannot confirm that with certainty, do not drive it. Call a tow. The cost of a tow is alm

ost always less than the cost of the damage you will cause by driving a sick engine. For more on that math, [here is a straight comparison of towing cost versus the risk of driving an overheating car.](/car-overheating-towing-cost-vs-driving-to-mechanic-risk/)

## How Do I Call for Help From the Side of the Road?

Call 911 first if anyone is injured or if you see flames. For smoke without fire, call your roadside assistance provider directly: AAA, USAA, State Farm, GEICO, and most insurers include towing. If you have no coverage, search "tow truck near me" with your location and call directly. Give the dispatcher your exact location using highway markers, exit numbers, or a cross street. Your phone's maps app will show your GPS coordinates if you cannot see a sign.

While you wait, stay behind the guardrail if there is one, keep your hazards on, and do not attempt to open the hood until the engine has been off for at least 20 to 30 minutes. A pressurized cooling system that is still hot can spray boiling coolant the moment the cap is loosened.

## Common Questions

**Q: Can I open the hood to check what's wrong while the car is still hot?**
A: Wait at least 20 to 30 minutes after shutting the engine off. A hot cooling system is under pressure, and opening the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while it is hot can spray boiling coolant and cause burns. Once cool, you can look, but do not start the engine again until you know what failed.

**Q: My car smoked and now it won't start. What happened?**
A: If the engine overheated severely before you got it off, it may have hydrolocked (coolant entered the cylinders) or the starter is protecting itself from heat. Either way, do not force it to crank repeatedly. Get it towed and have a mechanic check for a blown head gasket or seized components. [This article covers exactly that situation.](/car-wont-start-after-overheating-do-i-need-tow/)

**Q: Is white smoke from under the hood always coolant?**
A: Usually yes, especially if it smells faintly sweet. Water vapor from a cold engine on a cold morning is normal and clears in a minute or two. Persistent white smoke that keeps coming after the engine is warm, or that has a sweet smell, almost always points to coolant burning off, which means a leak or a head gasket problem.

**Q: How much will it cost to tow a smoking car?**
A: A standard local tow runs roughly $75 to $150 for the first few miles, with per-mile charges after that. If you have roadside assistance through your insurer or AAA, the tow may be free or heavily discounted. Call your provider first before paying out of pocket.

**Q: Should I call the police when my car breaks down with smoke on the highway?**
A: You do not have to unless there is an injury or a fire. If you are in a dangerous spot, on a blind curve or blocking a lane, call 911 and they can send a trooper to manage traffic. Otherwise, hazards on, get clear of the car, and call a tow service directly.
