> **Quick Answer:** Pull over immediately. Smoke under the hood means something is burning or boiling, and continuing to drive can destroy your engine or start a fire. Get fully off the road, turn off the engine, get out and stand away from the car. Do not open the hood right away. Call for a tow. Do not try to drive it to a shop.
## What Should I Do the Moment I See Smoke Coming from Under the Hood?
Get off the road now, not at the next exit. Activate your hazard lights, steer to the right shoulder or the nearest parking lot, and shut the engine off as soon as you stop. Speed of response matters here because some causes, like a coolant leak hitting a hot exhaust manifold, are annoying. Others, like an oil leak near ignition sources, can escalate to an engine fire within minutes.
Once you are stopped and the engine is off:
1. Get yourself and any passengers out of the car and move at least 50 feet away from it.
2. Do not open the hood yet. Hot steam can cause serious burns, and introducing air to a small fire makes it worse.
3. Wait five to ten minutes before even considering looking under the hood.
4. If you see flames rather than smoke, do not open the hood at all. Call 911 immediately.
If you are stopped on a highway shoulder, stay behind the guardrail and well back from the travel lane while you wait. Read more about staying safe in this situation at [Car Died on Highway Shoulder: Is It Safe to Wait for a Tow Truck?](/car-died-on-highway-shoulder-safe-to-wait-for-tow-truck/).
## What Is Actually Causing the Smoke?
The color tells you a lot before you ever open the hood.
**White or gray smoke** coming from the front of the car is usually steam from coolant. A blown radiator hose, a failed radiator cap, or a cracked coolant reservoir can dump coolant onto a hot engine block or exhaust, producing a thick white cloud. This is serious but not immediately a fire risk.
**Blue or bluish-gray smoke** typically means oil is burning. An oil leak dripping onto the exhaust manifold is the most common culprit. The manifold on most V6 and V8 engines runs at 700 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit during normal operation. Any oil that hits it burns off fast and produces acrid blue smoke.
**Black smoke** with a burning smell is often an electrical short, burning plastic, or in rarer cases, a fuel leak near a heat source. This is the most urgent scenario.
Do not try to diagnose it yourself on a busy shoulder. Knowing the color helps you describe the situation accurately when you call for help or talk to a mechanic, and it helps the tow driver know what to expect when they arrive.
## Is It Safe to Open the Hood and Check?
Only if there are no flames and the smoke has slowed down or stopped after sitting for five to ten minutes. Even then, stand to the side when you pop the latch, not directly in front of the hood. Pressurized coolant systems can release scalding steam when the seal breaks.
Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The cooling system on most cars runs at 15 to 16 PSI. Opening that cap while it is hot can spray 200-degree coolant directly at your face. If y

ou want to check the coolant level, wait until the engine is fully cold, which usually means at least 30 to 45 minutes after shutting it off.
If you see an obvious disconnected hose or a puddle of coolant or oil under the car, note it and tell the tow company. Do not attempt to reconnect hoses or add fluids on a hot engine.
## Should I Call a Tow Truck or Can I Drive It Somewhere?
Call a tow truck. A smoking engine is not a drive-to-the-shop situation. If it is coolant, your engine can overheat and seize within a mile or two of driving. A seized engine can cost $3,000 to $8,000 or more to repair, and that is assuming the block is not cracked. A tow costs a fraction of that.
If you have AAA or roadside assistance through your insurance, call them first. If you do not have coverage, you will be paying out of pocket, and it is worth knowing [how long a tow truck takes to arrive](/how-long-does-it-take-for-a-tow-truck-to-arrive/) so you are not standing in the dark guessing.

## Common Questions
**Q: Can smoke under the hood mean my car is about to catch fire?**
A: Yes, it can, though most smoke under the hood is steam from coolant or oil burning on a hot exhaust, not an actual fire. If you see orange flames or the smoke is black and smells like burning plastic or rubber, get away from the car and call 911. Do not go back for belongings.
**Q: What if the smoke stops after I pull over? Can I keep driving?**
A: No. The smoke stopped because the engine cooled slightly or because pressure equalized, not because the problem fixed itself. Whatever caused it is still there. Drive it and you risk a full overheating event or an oil fire.
**Q: My temperature gauge is in the red and there is smoke. What does that mean?**
A: Your engine is overheating, and the smoke is almost certainly steam from coolant boiling over. Turn the engine off immediately. Running an overheated engine even for another minute can warp the cylinder head, which is a repair that often costs more than the car is worth.
**Q: How much will a tow cost if I'm broken down because of this?**
A: A standard local tow runs $75 to $150 for the first five miles in most cities, then $3 to $7 per mile after that. Rates vary by market. If you are in a major metro like Los Angeles or Miami, prices trend higher. Check the specific city articles on this site for local rate ranges.
**Q: Can I add coolant or water to stop the overheating and drive to a shop?**
A: Only if the engine is fully cold and you can do so safely. Adding cold water to a hot engine can crack the block due to thermal shock. If the engine is cool, topping off the coolant may get you to a nearby shop, but have it looked at the same day. Do not skip the diagnosis.
