The most reliable way to stop birds fouling a car on the drive is to remove the perches they use to sit above it — fence tops, wall copings, gate posts and overhanging branches are almost always the source. Block those landing spots and the droppings stop landing on your car.
Why your drive is a target in the first place
Birds don't aim at your car — they aim at the fence, wall or post directly above it and gravity does the rest. Pigeons and seagulls in particular are creatures of habit: once a spot feels safe for perching, they return to it every morning, often in the same small group. If your drive sits beneath a fence run or brick wall, that structure is the real problem. The car is just unfortunate geography.
Overhanging trees and telegraph wires are also common culprits, but those are harder to treat — the fence and wall above the parking space usually offer the quickest win.
Step 1 — Identify exactly where they're perching
Before spending anything, spend five minutes watching. Where do the birds sit before the mess appears? Common spots:
- The flat top of a close-board fence panel
- A brick or concrete wall coping
- Gate posts or decorative finials
- The gutter or fascia directly above the drive
- Overhanging branches from a neighbour's tree
Once you know the specific perch, you can treat just that run rather than the entire boundary.
Step 2 — Fit deterrent spikes to the fence or wall above the car
Fitting spikes to the fence top or wall coping above your parking space is the most permanent fix, and it works on pigeons, seagulls and corvids (crows, jackdaws, magpies) equally well.
What to look for in a spike strip:
Flat, single-height spikes have one flaw: pigeons simply shuffle to the one gap that suits them, and climbing animals — squirrels, cats — walk straight over. A strip with staggered spike heights is significantly harder to navigate. For a typical close-board fence panel (1.83 m wide), you need coverage along the full top rail. A 4 m pack covers roughly two full panels; the 8 m pack covers four to five. Strips can be cut across the sections or split lengthways to cover a narrower ledge — useful on wall copings that are only 50–75 mm wide.
Fitting to a fence top:
- Clear any existing dirt, moss or old spike residue.
- Measure the run and cut strips to length with scissors or a craft knife.
- Pre-drill pilot holes every 300–400 mm if fixing with screws — included in every ThornGuard pack.
- Cable ties work well on fence tops where the rail is thin; also included.
- The strip folds along its length, so it wraps the fence top and covers the face on both sides — this matters because pigeons will try the side of the panel if the top is blocked.
For a wall coping you cannot drill into (listed building, shared boundary wall, or just don't want to), waterproof adhesive pads are available separately and bond directly to brick, concrete and stone.

Step 3 — Deal with gutters and fascia boards
If the perch is the gutter directly above your parking space, the approach is slightly different. Gutters are rarely drilled, but the spike strip can be cable-tied around the outside lip of the gutter or adhesive-fixed to the fascia board behind it. A short run (1–2 m) is usually enough to break the habit — birds won't fly along the gutter to find the untreated section if the spot they normally land is blocked.

Step 4 — Protect the car itself (short-term fix while you sort the perches)
If you need to protect the car immediately while you wait for spikes to arrive or get installed:
- A breathable car cover is the most practical short-term solution. Choose one rated for outdoor use; avoid non-breathable plastic covers that trap moisture and scratch paintwork.
- Reflective tape or holographic bird scarer discs hung above the drive can reduce landings temporarily — they work best when they move in the breeze, and lose effectiveness over a few weeks as birds habituate to them.
- Fake owls or hawks have the same limitation: pigeons figure them out quickly unless you move them every few days.
None of these are permanent. The only thing that makes a lasting difference is removing the perch.
What about overhanging branches from a neighbour's tree?
You are legally entitled to cut any branches that overhang your property back to the boundary line — but you cannot cut beyond it, and you must offer the cut branches back to the neighbour. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), check with your local council before cutting anything.
If cutting isn't practical, the car cover plus treating the fence below the branch is usually the best compromise.
Does bird repellent gel work on fences?
Bird repellent gel (a sticky, transparent coating applied to ledges) does deter some birds — pigeons dislike landing on anything tacky. The drawbacks: it becomes ineffective after a few months as it collects dust and debris, it can catch small birds and insects (a welfare concern), and it makes a mess if it gets onto paintwork, clothing or pet fur. We don't recommend it as a primary method on fences near cars for those reasons.
Physical spikes last years outdoors without maintenance and don't degrade into a sticky hazard. If longevity matters — and on a fence you see every day, it should — UV-stabilised polypropylene spikes are the more practical long-term choice. Cheap polypropylene spikes from discount suppliers often go brittle and snap after a single winter; virgin polypropylene (what ThornGuard uses) holds its shape and flexibility year after year.
