How to Analyze Any Stock in 15 Minutes
If you're a retail investor (like me), you've probably spent hours manually calculating P/E ratios, profit margins, and ROE across different stocks. It's tedious, error-prone, and eats into your actual research time.
I finally built a solution using Google Sheets — a Financial Ratio Dashboard that does the heavy lifting automatically.
What This Dashboard Does
This template takes raw financial data (just 11 inputs per stock) and instantly calculates 12 key ratios:
- Gross Profit Margin = (Revenue - COGS) / Revenue
- Net Profit Margin = Net Income / Revenue
- Return on Equity (ROE) = Net Income / Shareholders' Equity
- Return on Assets (ROA) = Net Income / Total Assets
- Current Ratio = Current Assets / Current Liabilities
- Quick Ratio = (Current Assets - Inventory) / Current Liabilities
- Debt-to-Equity = Total Liabilities / Shareholders' Equity
- Asset Turnover = Revenue / Total Assets
- Inventory Turnover = COGS / Average Inventory
- Earnings Per Share (EPS) = Net Income / Shares Outstanding
- P/E Ratio = Stock Price / EPS
- Dividend Yield = Annual Dividend / Stock Price
All formulas are pre-built — just paste numbers in the input sheet, and the dashboard updates instantly.
How to Use It
- Pick a stock you want to analyze (e.g., $AAPL or $MSFT)
- Pull the last 4 quarters of financial data from their 10-K or 10-Q
- Enter: Revenue, Net Income, Total Assets, Current Assets, Current Liabilities, Total Liabilities, Shareholders' Equity, Operating Cash Flow, Inventory, Shares Outstanding, and Current Stock Price
- The dashboard shows: 12 ratios with color-coded health indicators (green = good, red = warning)
- Compare up to 10 stocks side-by-side in the comparison tracker
Pro Tips for Retail Investors
- Focus on trends: A single ratio in isolation is noise. Track 3-5 quarters to see direction.
- Cross-check with industry: A P/E of 30 might be normal for tech but expensive for utilities.
- Use with a checklist: I pair this dashboard with a 10-point quality checklist before buying any stock.
Get the Pre-Built Template
If you want to skip the setup, I offer the exact template I built on Gumroad. It's $29, includes all formulas pre-installed, conditional formatting, a 10-stock comparison sheet, and a detailed setup guide. Lifetime updates included.
But honestly, you can build your own using this article — the formulas are all above!
