Introduction
Apple’s foray into foldable smartphones with the iPhone Duo marks a pivotal moment in the company’s hardware strategy. While the device carries the familiar iPhone DNA—iOS, MagSafe, and a polished build—it introduces a new form factor that challenges both design conventions and user expectations. This review dissects every facet of the Duo, from its hinge mechanics to its software quirks, and assesses whether the foldable experience justifies the premium price and the learning curve.
Why the iPhone Duo Matters
Apple’s entry into the foldable market is more than a novelty; it signals a shift in how the industry perceives device form factors. The Duo’s “passport” design, with a 5.4‑inch outer display and a larger inner screen, offers a unique middle ground between a traditional phone and a tablet. This hybrid approach could influence future iterations of iPads and Macs, blurring the lines between portable and stationary computing.
Moreover, the Duo’s hardware and software choices reflect Apple’s broader ecosystem strategy. By integrating MagSafe accessories, iOS 27.1 SDK support, and a suite of camera‑centric features, Apple aims to create a seamless experience that leverages its existing services—iCloud, FaceTime, and the App Store—while inviting developers to rethink app design for foldable screens.
Hardware Deep Dive
Hinge and Build Quality
The Duo’s hinge is a standout feature. Crafted from a single, polished metal bar, it offers a smooth folding motion that feels both robust and elegant. The nanotexture finish on the inner screen cleverly masks the crease, reducing glare and minimizing the visual impact of the fold. However, the design does introduce a slight shadow when the phone is closed, which can be noticeable in bright lighting.
Apple’s commitment to durability is evident with an IP68 rating, granting dust and water resistance. Users should exercise caution around sand, as the rating does not cover abrasive environments. The device’s weight—254 g—places it heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, a factor that may affect handling comfort during extended use.
Display and Design
The outer 5.4‑inch display is a high‑resolution OLED panel that delivers vibrant colors and deep blacks. When unfolded, the inner screen expands to a 7.6‑inch diagonal, offering a tablet‑like experience. The “passport” shape, wider and shorter than previous foldables, provides a more ergonomic grip. Yet, the off‑axis viewing angle on the inner screen is compromised in direct sunlight due to the nanotexture finish, a trade‑off that developers must consider when designing outdoor applications.
Camera System
The Duo features a dual rear‑camera setup, omitting the third telephoto lens found on many Android foldables. Despite this, the camera software compensates with intelligent features:
- Duo Preview: Displays the camera viewfinder on the outer screen, allowing subjects to see themselves before the shot.
- Smart Take: Automatically captures photos when the camera detects a group pose, reducing the need for manual triggers.
- Kids Cue: Plays Snoopy animations on the outer display to engage children during group photos.
The selfie camera array—an outer‑screen lens and an under‑display inner camera—provides flexibility for selfies and video calls. However, the under‑display camera’s resolution and low‑light performance lag behind the outer lens.
Accessories
Apple’s Folio With Kickstand case offers a protective shell and a built‑in stand for hands‑free viewing. Third‑party MagSafe wallets are available, though Apple’s official wallet protrudes beyond the phone’s edge, potentially affecting the hinge’s smoothness.
Software & Ecosystem
iOS 27.1 SDK and App Compatibility
Running on iOS 27.1, the Duo requires developers to adopt the new SDK to ensure full app compatibility. While many popular apps already support the foldable form factor, some still render poorly on the 7.6‑inch screen, as noted by reviewers. The requirement for a 50‑50 split‑screen layout limits multitasking flexibility, and the absence of floating windows or resizable panels can frustrate power users accustomed to Android’s multitasking.
Standby Mode and Assistive Touch
The Duo introduces a standby mode that activates when the device is propped up via its built‑in kickstand. This feature keeps the outer screen active while the inner screen remains off, conserving battery during passive viewing. Assistive Touch is required for trackpad functionality, a workaround that may feel clunky compared to native trackpad support on other Apple devices.
Reachability and Future Updates
Apple plans to roll out a Reachability feature later this year, which will allow users to bring the inner screen closer to the eye without fully unfolding the device. This update could improve ergonomics for one‑handed use, but its release timeline remains uncertain.
Battery, Performance, and Everyday Use
Battery life on the Duo is modest. After six hours of screen‑on time, the device retains roughly 45 % of its charge, and most days end with around 40 % remaining.
