Case Study: A $349 Domain That Produced Real Replies in Two Weeks

A $349 .com, 41 cold emails, 33 contact forms and four touches across twelve days. One travel publisher replied four times inside two weeks — and every message was selling us guest posts. The campaign numbers, the messages in order, and why a real reply is not a buying signal.

The campaign did what the brief promised. It produced real replies, from a real business, inside two weeks. What it did not produce was a single sentence about the domain.

GoodTravelSites.com went out on 6 October to 41 travel businesses by email and 33 travel sites through a contact-form worklist. The first reply landed seven days later. By day ten the same prospect had sent four messages. Every one of them was selling us guest posts.

That is the case study: not a deliverability failure, not a broken funnel, but a clean measurement of what a reply means. A reply means the message was read. It does not mean the name was wanted.

The name, the price, and the page

GoodTravelSites.com is a two-word .com in the travel category with a $349 buy-now price on the shelf. Three places carried that number on the day the campaign launched: the portfolio listing, the single-name landing page at dnwai.com/d/goodtravelsites.com/ , and the Afternic checkout the landing page points at, which returned $349.00 when pulled before the first email went out.

The check is not cosmetic. A price that changes between the email and the checkout is the fastest way to lose a reply you already earned. On this campaign the message, the page and the register agreed, so every reply below is a reply to the same offer.

How the list was built

The 41 email prospects came from three pools: 23 from Miami, 11 from Las Vegas, and 7 from a travel contact list. Each prospect was assigned a fixed sending inbox — 12 in total, so no single mailbox carried the whole campaign and no domain saw its own address twice.

28 addresses verified valid, 13 accept-all
4 touches, scheduled at day 0, +3, +7 and +12
touches one and two carried $349
touch three carried the binary question
touch four carried $295 as the closing number

The form side was separate work: 33 travel sites with no usable email address, published as a manual worklist. Twenty-three could be submitted without a captcha; ten needed a human to solve one. None of the 33 hosts appeared in the 41-address email list, so the campaign touched 74 distinct businesses, not 41 plus a rounding error.

The twelve days, in order

Day 0, 6 October, 19:59–20:25 UTC. All 41 first emails left in 26 minutes.

Day 3, 9 October, 20:17. One automatic reply from a luxury travel agency: the office was closed, messages would be answered on the next business day. Counted as an auto-reply, not a reply.

Day 7, 13 October, 19:59. The third touch went out: "One question, and then I will leave you alone: is the name wrong for [company], or is the number?"

Day 7, 13 October, 21:07 — sixty-eight minutes later. The first reply arrived. It did not answer the question. It opened: "Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in publishing on [site]." Then a rate card: listicles and brand mentions $18, standard guest post $35, sensitive-topic guest post $50, standard link insertion $20, sensitive-topic link insertion $30, banner or homepage link $100 a month.

Day 8, 14 October, 21:12. "Just following up on the pricing we sent over — did everything look good?"

Day 9, 15 October, 21:02. A new subject line, "Quick check-in", and an explanation that emails like theirs sometimes land in spam folders.

Day 10, 16 October, 21:17. "Last note from us for now — the pricing still stands whenever you're ready."

Four messages on four consecutive days, all between 21:02 and 21:17 UTC, all from one address.

What actually happened in that thread

The prospect is a travel-content publisher. Its website sells placements. Its inbox receives a steady stream of people asking to publish, and it keeps a reply template for exactly that. Our message — a short note from a stranger containing a domain name, a price and one question — arrived looking like the opening of a submission request. So the answer was the product.

Read the third touch again: "is the name wrong, or is the number?" It is a good question for a buyer. It is not a question a publisher can answer, because neither branch applies. They are not evaluating the name. They are quoting their rate card.

That is the first lesson of the campaign, and it has nothing to do with copywriting: the reply was shaped by the recipient's business model, not by the quality of the name. A company that monetises inbound requests answers every inbound request with a rate card. The same email to a tour operator with no publishing product would have received silence, or a question about the price. Different inbox, different economics.

Counting it honestly

The same campaign produces four different numbers depending on what you count:

41 email prospects, 1 replied: a 2.4% prospect reply rate.
41 prospects, 4 messages: a 9.8% message reply rate — the flattering number, and the wrong one.
74 contact points, 1 prospect: 1.4% of the whole campaign.
100% of replies were about the other party's services: 0 offers, 0 price conversations, 0 sales.

Compare that with the hundred replies we read across all of 2026 : two human messages out of a hundred, one opt-out and one $50 offer. A different denominator, and the same lesson — the messages that look like engagement are usually the other side's routine.

The timing matters as much as the count. The only reply came 68 minutes after the third touch, not after the first. Had the campaign stopped at two touches, it would have reported zero replies and taught us nothing. The third touch did not create interest, though. It created a reply, because it was the one message that asked a yes-or-no question a stranger could answer in one line.

The money at $349

The landing page sells through Afternic. At this price the commission setting, not the price, decides the net:

30% — Afternic Boost on, the default: $104.70 fee, $244.30 net
25% — Basic, Boost off: $87.25 fee, $261.75 net
20% — Boost on with GoDaddy nameservers: $69.80 fee, $279.20 net
15% — Basic with those nameservers: $52.35 fee, $296.65 net
5% — Custom Checkout Link on a Buy Now we close ourselves, $15 minimum: $17.45 fee, $331.55 net

The gap between the default and the best configuration is $87.25, a quarter of the asking price, decided by a checkbox and two DNS records. The gap between $349 and the $295 closing number is $54. On this name the commission setting was worth more than the discount — which is the argument for fixing the configuration before cutting the price.

At $295 the same ladder runs $206.50, $221.25, $236.00, $250.75 and $280.00. Both numbers appear here because both appeared in the campaign: the first two touches at $349, the last at $295, four days apart.

What we changed after this campaign

Filter publishers out before the list is built. Any travel site with a write-for-us, advertise or guest-post page is in the content business. It can still buy a domain, but it will read a first-contact email through the lens of its own rate card. Those sites belong in a different sequence, or nowhere.
Read the monetisation before writing the message. One minute on a prospect's pricing page would have told us what the reply would be. Category matching — travel site, travel domain — is not business-model matching.
Count prospects, not messages. Four messages from one address reads like 9.8%. One prospect out of 41 is 2.4%. The second number forecasts revenue; the first measures how persistent the other side was.
A fast reply is a routing signal. Sixty-eight minutes means the recipient has a template. That is useful information about their operation, not about your name.
A no-reply is not a no. Forty of 41 prospects stayed silent for seventeen days. Silence after a cold email is the default, not a verdict. The file stayed open through the fourth touch and the $295 number, and the name stayed listed.

What did not happen

No offer, no counter, no escrow, no transfer. We cannot attribute a single reply to the form layer: no message mentioning the domain arrived at the address used on that page, and the worklist carries no delivery receipts. The four touches were the whole sequence; nobody was re-emailed after the fourth. Nothing here is a partial success dressed up as one.

Where the name stands

GoodTravelSites.com is still for sale at $349, and the closing number in the last email was $295. The campaign produced what cold outreach reliably produces: a small number of humans, most of them busy selling something of their own. That is not nothing. It is a measurement — and the measurement says the next 41 names need a list filtered by business model, not by category.

The name is the offer. The reply is only proof that the offer was read.

Sources and method

Campaign structure, prices and the 41-prospect list come from the campaign's own state file: 41 prospects, 12 sending inboxes, four touches dated 6, 9, 13 and 18 October 2026, list price $349 and closing price $295. The send window and the 41-out-of-41 delivery count are from the build record dated 6 October 2026, which also records the 33-card form page, the 23-without-captcha and 10-with-captcha split, and zero broken links across its 33 targets. The $349 page price and the $349.00 Afternic price were pulled on 6 October 2026, before the first send. Reply counts come from a read-only scan of the fifteen group mailboxes, inbox, junk and spam, 6–23 October 2026: four messages from one prospect address and one automatic reply, with no other message from the 41 prospect addresses. The prospect is described by business type rather than by name. Commission rates are Afternic's published grid as summarised in our comparison of Atom, Afternic and Sedo. All arithmetic above was computed from those figures.
