Sveltekit is the framework for the AI Age

Most of the code in my projects is now written by AI coding agents. I design the product, decide the architecture and data model, and review what comes back. That changes the question I ask about frameworks. It's no longer "which one do I enjoy typing?" It's "which one does an agent write well, and which one can I review quickly when it doesn't?"

For me, that's SvelteKit. Version 3 shipped in early October, and I've upgraded Costbase and Embark to it.

My reason comes down to one idea: less code. Code that says the same thing in fewer lines is easier to read, quicker to review and harder to get wrong. SvelteKit needs less of it at every layer: in each component, between the database and the page, and in what finally reaches the browser.

Less code is less to review

Svelte components are close to plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. State is a variable, updating it is an assignment, and there's no hooks layer to get wrong. Here's the same client search box in each.

React (ClientSearch.tsx):

import { useMemo, useState } from "react";

export function ClientSearch({
  clients,
}: { clients: Client[] }) {
  const [query, setQuery] = useState("");
  const results = useMemo(
    () =>
      clients.filter((c) =>
        c.name
          .toLowerCase()
          .includes(query.toLowerCase()),
      ),
    [clients, query],
  );

  return (
    <>
      <input
        value={query}
        onChange={(e) => setQuery(e.target.value)}
      />
      <p>{results.length} clients</p>
      <ul>
        {results.map((c) => (
          <li key={c.id}>{c.name}</li>
        ))}
      </ul>
    </>
  );
}

Svelte (ClientSearch.svelte):

<script lang="ts">
  let { clients }: { clients: Client[] } = $props();
  let query = $state("");
  const results = $derived(
    clients.filter((c) =>
      c.name
        .toLowerCase()
        .includes(query.toLowerCase()),
    ),
  );
</script>

<input bind:value={query} />
<p>{results.length} clients</p>
<ul>
  {#each results as c (c.id)}
    <li>{c.name}</li>
  {/each}
</ul>

The React version isn't badly written; that's just what React asks for. The Svelte version has no setter to call, no dependency array to keep in sync with the code above it, and no fragment wrapper. When an agent writes the Svelte one, there's very little to check, and no stale closure waiting to happen.

Smaller components also mean smaller diffs, fewer tokens in the agent's context, and fewer places for it to wander off.

That last point is measurable. Andrey Kucherenko wrote the same five components (a greeting, a counter, a todo list, a data fetch and a filterable table) in each major framework and counted the tokens:

Source: We Measured the LLM Token Cost of 5 Frontend Frameworks (HackerNoon, June 2026), counted with tiktoken's cl100k_base.

A quarter fewer tokens than React adds up across a codebase. The agent fits more of your app into its context, each request costs less, and, most importantly, there's less for you to read. As Kucherenko puts it, anything you state in code costs tokens, and anything the compiler infers is free.

The bottleneck in agentic development isn't how fast code gets written. It's how fast a person can confirm the code is right. A framework that needs less code to say the same thing speeds up the part that's actually slow.

Less glue code

In most full-stack apps, a lot of the code isn't your product at all. It's glue: API routes, fetch wrappers, cache keys, form state. SvelteKit removes most of it. Remote functions give data loading and mutations a single shape: a schema-validated function in a .remote.ts file, called directly from a component.

// src/lib/remotes/trip.remote.ts
import { form, query } from "$app/server";
import { z } from "zod";
import { eq } from "drizzle-orm";
import { db } from "#lib/server/db/index.js";
import { tripTable } from "#lib/server/db/schema.js";

export const getTrip = query(z.string(), async (id) => {
  return db.query.tripTable.findFirst({ where: eq(tripTable.id, id) });
});

export const renameTrip = form(
  z.object({ id: z.string(), name: z.string().min(1, "Name is required") }),
  async ({ id, name }) => {
    await db.update(tripTable).set({ name }).where(eq(tripTable.id, id));
    await getTrip(id).refresh();
  },
);

<script lang="ts">
  import { getTrip, renameTrip } from "#lib/remotes/trip.remote.js";

  let { id }: { id: string } = $props();
  const trip = $derived(await getTrip(id));
</script>

<h1>{trip?.name}</h1>

<form {...renameTrip}>
  <input {...renameTrip.fields.id.as("hidden", id)} />
  <input {...renameTrip.fields.name.as("text")} />
  <button>Save</button>
</form>

That's the whole round trip. There's no API route to invent, no fetch wrapper and no client cache keys to keep in sync, and types flow from the schema to the form fields. Code you don't write is code you don't have to review.

It also means no form library. In React you'd typically reach for React Hook Form or Formik, plus a resolver to connect it to your schema. Here the form function validates against the same Zod schema on the server, gives each field its error message, and works as a plain HTML form even before JavaScript loads.

One shape also means one thing to learn. Once an agent has seen one remote file in a project, it writes the next one the same way. Embark has more than 50 remote functions and they all look alike, which is exactly what you want from code you didn't type yourself.

Less to check by hand

Reviewing is easier when the tooling has already caught the obvious mistakes. An agent will happily do the wrong thing if nothing stops it, and SvelteKit stops a lot of it:

• Server code stays on the server. Modules in server directories can't be imported into client code, and SvelteKit 3 now enforces this everywhere in the project. An agent can't accidentally ship a database client or a secret to the browser.
• Templates are type-checked. svelte-check checks .svelte files, not just .ts, so a renamed prop or a wrong field fails the check instead of failing in production.
• The compiler explains itself. When I upgraded to SvelteKit 3, svelte-check flagged three components that copied a prop into local state. That's a subtle bug: the component shows stale data after the prop changes. The warning says what's wrong and links to the fix, which is exactly the kind of feedback an agent can act on without me.

Fast, specific feedback is what turns an agent from a guesser into something closer to a careful junior developer. Svelte's compiler gives you a lot of it for free.

Less code in the browser

Less code applies to what your users download, too. Svelte is a compiler, not a runtime. Your components compile to plain JavaScript that updates the DOM directly, so there's no virtual DOM and no framework runtime to download before anything works. To see the difference, I built the official Vite starter app, the same small counter page, with each framework:

About 5.6× less JavaScript for the same page.

Source: my own build of create-vite's svelte-ts and react-ts templates: Svelte 5.57, React 19.3, Vite 8.3.

A starter page is a toy, though. Loren Stewart built the same kanban app in ten frameworks, each with drag and drop, comments, optimistic updates and the same Drizzle database, and measured what the board page ships:

All four scored 100 on Lighthouse. The difference is what a phone on a slow connection has to download, parse and run.

Source: I Built the Same App 10 Times (Loren Stewart): Svelte 5, Nuxt 4, TanStack Start with React 19 and Next.js 16, Lighthouse mobile emulation, median of 10 runs.

Stewart's own caveat makes the gap more important, not less: real apps typically ship five to ten times more JavaScript once analytics, auth and third-party libraries arrive, so a heavier starting point compounds.

That gap matters most on phones and slow connections, where every kilobyte of JavaScript has to be downloaded, parsed and run before the page responds. With SvelteKit handling server rendering, routing and data on top, it's a full-stack option that starts lighter and stays lighter.

Switching is no longer a rewrite

The biggest reason teams stayed on React used to be the cost of leaving. Rewriting a working app by hand could take months. With coding agents, that's changed.

In March, Strawberry Browser moved its entire UI from React to Svelte, and the numbers are hard to ignore:

• 130,000 lines of code, in two weeks, by one engineer. He used swarms of coding agents, with the original React code kept alongside as the reference to port from.
• About 21,000 fewer lines afterwards. The migration added 103,000 lines and removed 124,000: the same app, in less code.
• 2× faster in production, with first contentful paint dropping from 300 ms to 124 ms.
• 10× fewer re-renders on streaming responses, and 56 unused dependencies removed along the way.

Their one warning is worth repeating: "LLMs write much worse Svelte than you think." What made it work was a strict Svelte ruleset for the agents to follow. Which brings me to the weak spot.

The training data gap is closing

The honest weakness: models have seen far more React than Svelte, and Svelte 5's runes are newer than a lot of their training data. Early on, agents kept writing Svelte 4 syntax like export let and $: statements.

The Svelte team has done more about this than any other framework team I know of:

• LLM-ready docs. svelte.dev/llms.txt publishes the full Svelte and SvelteKit documentation in formats built for models, including abridged and compressed versions.
• An official MCP server. It lets an agent look up current documentation, and its svelte-autofixer tool runs static analysis on generated code before you ever see it.
• Official skills and plugins for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and others, including a subagent dedicated to editing Svelte files.

With those in place, the old-syntax problem has mostly gone away for me. The agent checks the docs instead of guessing from memory.

"But the React ecosystem"

It's the first objection everyone raises, and in 2026 it mostly doesn't hold. Everything a full-stack app needs is there, often with less wrapping than the React equivalent, and I use all of it in production:

• UI components: shadcn-svelte, a port of shadcn/ui built on the Bits UI primitives. Costbase and Embark both use it.
• Charts: LayerChart, a Svelte-native charting library, which draws Costbase's portfolio charts.
• Any plain JavaScript library: because Svelte has no virtual DOM to fight, libraries like Chart.js, D3 and Leaflet work directly, with no React wrapper package. Embark's trip maps are plain Leaflet.
• Auth: Better Auth, with first-class SvelteKit support.
• Database: Drizzle ORM, which doesn't care what your front end is.
• Validation: Zod, Valibot or any Standard Schema library, plugged straight into remote functions.
• Forms: built in, as above.

There are still more React libraries in total, and more React developers to hire. But the gap that matters, the libraries you actually reach for in a real app, has closed. If you're on a React team, I'd look at TanStack Start before Next.js.

For a solo developer or a small team building app-shaped products with agents, it comes back to the same idea. Less code in each component is less to read. Less glue is less to review. Less JavaScript is a faster app. When the agent writes the code and you're the one who has to understand it, the framework that needs the least of it wins. That's why SvelteKit is my default for everything behind a login.
