Google Gemini now provides two first-party ways to turn a natural-language prompt into a working web experience. Gemini Canvas is designed for rapid visual prototyping inside the Gemini interface, while Build mode in Google AI Studio generates a code-backed, full-stack web app that can be refined, shared, exported, or deployed to Google Cloud Run.
The distinction matters for businesses that want to test an idea quickly without treating every early experiment as a finished software product. Canvas can help turn a concept into a shareable prototype in minutes. AI Studio Build mode offers a more direct route from the same kind of prompt to an editable application codebase and a live deployment workflow.
Two Gemini paths from idea to web experience
Gemini Canvas focuses on fast prototypes
Canvas is Gemini's prompt-to-prototype workspace. A user selects Canvas below the prompt bar, describes what they want, and uses the Create option to generate a web page or another deliverable. Google positions the workflow around quickly creating apps, games, web pages, infographics, and similar artifacts.
This makes Canvas useful when the immediate question is whether an idea is understandable, visually useful, or worth pursuing. A manager could use it to sketch an internal calculator, create a simple customer-facing explainer, or demonstrate the flow of a proposed service without first commissioning a complete application.
Canvas is available to all Gemini users. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers receive enhanced access through Gemini 3 and a larger token context. Its editing experience has an important limitation: text styling and formatting edits are desktop-only.
AI Studio Build mode adds code and deployment
For applications that need to move beyond an early prototype, Build mode in Google AI Studio provides a more complete development path. Users describe their goal, and Gemini, through the Antigravity agent, generates a codebase and a live preview. By default, a generated web app includes a React frontend and a Node.js backend.
Google's official AI Studio Build mode documentation describes a workflow in which users can generate an app, preview it, iterate on it, and deploy it. They can also link GitHub, start from an App Gallery example, import existing code, export a ZIP file, or push code to GitHub for external hosting.
That is a materially different proposition from a visual mockup. Build mode creates code that teams can inspect and extend, while Google Cloud Run provides a direct hosting target. Google also documents integrated secrets management and workspace tools as part of this end-to-end flow.
| Area | Gemini Canvas | Google AI Studio Build mode |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Rapid, visual-coding-style prototyping | Code-backed full-stack app generation |
| Typical output | Shareable app, game, web page, infographic, or similar artifact | Web app with a live preview, or a native Android app |
| Default web stack | Not specified in the supplied Canvas material | React frontend and Node.js backend |
| Next-step options | Iterate on a prototype within Gemini | Share, edit code, use GitHub, export a ZIP, or deploy to Cloud Run |
What this means for no-code evaluation
Gemini's new workflows overlap with a common reason businesses consider no-code tools: reducing the time between an idea and something people can see or use. But the supplied Google material supports a more specific comparison: Canvas and Build mode serve different stages of the same process.
Canvas is the better fit for validating an interface, communication asset, or lightweight app concept. Build mode is the stronger choice when the project needs an accessible codebase, backend logic, source control through GitHub, or a route to hosting. A prototype made in Canvas should not automatically be assumed to have the operational characteristics of a deployed Build mode application.
For decision-makers, that separation can prevent a common mistake: treating a persuasive demonstration as proof that an application is ready for real users, data, and business processes. The value of prompt-driven building is speed, but the choice of pathway should match the level of technical follow-through required.
Costs, integration choices, and practical uses
Google states that up to two AI Studio apps can be deployed to Cloud Run at no charge through its free tier. Hosting or deployment beyond that free tier can incur costs. This makes the service useful for initial experimentation, but a team should understand the hosting model before it moves a public or operationally important app into regular use.
Build mode is particularly relevant when an experiment must connect to existing development practices. GitHub linking supports collaboration, imported code creates a path for extending an existing project, and ZIP export leaves open the option of external hosting. Those capabilities mean a team is not restricted to a single prompt-generated preview once the project requires more hands-on development.
Potential practical uses supported by the platform's prompt, preview, refinement, and deployment workflow include:
- Creating a prototype for an internal tool before committing to a larger build.
- Building a simple web experience to test a new customer-facing idea.
- Starting a web app that developers can review, modify, and manage through GitHub.
- Using App Gallery examples as a starting point rather than beginning with a blank prompt.
- Deploying an early application to Cloud Run after testing it in AI Studio.
The speed of generation does not remove implementation responsibilities. Google documents security considerations around deployment, including server-side handling of API keys. Businesses should therefore review generated code, decide how secrets will be managed, and confirm that the hosting and integration approach suits the app's intended use before relying on it in a live workflow.
Prompt-generated apps are most valuable when they connect to a real workflow rather than remain a demo. Scalevise can help assess the right use case, define requirements, and turn a prototype into a dependable implementation through practical AI adoption planning. That work can reduce rework before a team commits to deployment, integrations, or ongoing hosting costs. Request an AI consultancy to map your next prompt-to-app project.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Gemini Canvas and AI Studio Build mode?
Canvas is Gemini's workspace for quickly generating shareable prototypes and visual artifacts from prompts. AI Studio Build mode generates a code-backed application with a live preview and options to edit, export, share, or deploy it.
Can Google Gemini create a live website from a prompt?
AI Studio Build mode can generate a full-stack web app from a prompt and deploy it directly to Google Cloud Run. It can also export the app as a ZIP file or push it to GitHub for external hosting.
What technology does AI Studio Build mode use for web apps?
By default, AI Studio Build mode generates a web app with a React frontend and a Node.js backend.
Is Gemini Canvas free to use?
Canvas is available to all Gemini users. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers receive enhanced access through Gemini 3 and a larger token context.
Does deploying an AI Studio app cost money?
Google offers a free tier for deploying up to two AI Studio apps to Cloud Run. Deploying or hosting beyond that free tier can incur costs.
Conclusion
Google Gemini's Canvas and AI Studio Build mode create a practical progression from prompt-driven experimentation to code-backed web application deployment. Canvas lowers the barrier to testing an idea, while Build mode provides the code, preview, collaboration, and Cloud Run deployment options needed for a more substantial next step. The opportunity is significant for teams that pair rapid generation with careful review of code, security, integrations, and hosting costs.
