GitHub Pages offers a fantastic way to host static websites directly from your repository, providing an incredibly efficient path from code to live content. However, like any automated system, it can sometimes encounter unexpected snags that impact delivery schedules and obscure vital github metrics related to deployment health.
A recent discussion on the GitHub Community forum highlighted a particularly frustrating issue: GitHub Pages deployments getting stuck in a "Queued" state, rendering them uncancelable through the standard UI. This isn't just an inconvenience; it's a roadblock to continuous delivery and a potential blind spot for teams tracking their operational efficiency.
The Frustration of the "Stuck Queued"
The problem, as reported by user myconslutentservices, involved a "pages build and deployment" workflow (#70) for their local-shop-platform repository. Despite previous successful deployments and even a successfully canceled subsequent run (#71), run #70 remained permanently queued. Attempts to cancel it via the GitHub UI were met with the message: "Cannot cancel a workflow run that is not in progress." This effectively blocked all new Pages deployments, leaving the site's content stale and impacting project velocity. Another user, jabbisantos-droid, echoed this experience, confirming the widespread nature of the issue.
Why Standard Cancellation Fails
As contributor YCistak eloquently explained, this specific issue arises when the dynamic, GitHub-managed pages build and deployment workflow gets stuck before a runner ever picks it up. Because the run is never truly "in progress," the UI's cancel button—designed for active runs—is ineffective. This can obscure important github metrics related to deployment health, as the system reports a queued state without providing a clear path to resolution. It's a classic example of a system state that a standard git monitoring tool might report as 'queued' but without the necessary controls to resolve it.
Fortunately, the community offered several effective strategies to unblock these orphaned deployments and restore your deployment pipeline's health, improving your overall github metrics for deployment success.
1. Force-Cancel Through the API/CLI
The most direct method to clear a perpetually queued run is to bypass the UI and use the GitHub API or CLI. This allows you to force-cancel runs regardless of their "in progress" status, providing a level of control often found in dedicated git monitoring tool solutions. This is a critical workaround when the UI falls short.
Using the GitHub CLI:
# First, find the run ID of the stuck workflow (e.g., #70) gh run list -R myconslutentservices/local-shop-platform -w "pages build and deployment" -L 5 # Then, force-cancel it using the run ID gh api -X POST repos/myconslutentservices/local-shop-platform/actions/runs/<RUN_ID>/force-cancelRemember to replace <RUN_ID> with the actual ID of your stuck run. The GitHub documentation provides further details on force-canceling workflow runs.
After clearing the stuck run, you'll need to kickstart a new deployment. Pages deployments are inherently serialized, meaning a stuck run will block all subsequent ones. Once the blockage is removed, a new deployment will typically proceed.
-
Push an Empty Commit: The simplest way to trigger a new Pages build is to push any commit to your main branch. An empty commit works perfectly:
git commit --allow-empty -m "redeploy pages" && git push -
Toggle Pages Source: Alternatively, navigate to Settings → Pages in your repository. Temporarily switch the "Source" to another branch or folder, save, and then switch it back to your desired branch/folder (e.g.,
mainand/ (root)). This action will initiate a fresh build.
3. Taking Control with GitHub Actions
For teams seeking ultimate control, enhanced visibility, and more robust git monitoring tool capabilities for their Pages deployments, YCistak offers a powerful recommendation: switch your Pages source to GitHub Actions. Instead of relying on the dynamic, GitHub-managed workflow, you define your own.
This shift empowers your team with full ownership over the deployment workflow file. You can then cancel, re-run, or debug your Pages deployments just like any other GitHub Actions workflow. This level of control is crucial for maintaining predictable delivery schedules, which directly supports common okr examples software development focused on release frequency and stability. GitHub provides starter workflows like the "Static HTML" workflow to get you started easily.
Beyond the Fix: Proactive Workflow Management
Moving to a custom GitHub Actions workflow for Pages isn't just a fix for a specific bug; it's a strategic move towards more robust and transparent deployment practices. It provides clearer github metrics on deployment success rates, duration, and potential bottlenecks. This proactive approach ensures that your team maintains high productivity and delivery managers have accurate data to report on, rather than being stalled by unforeseen system states.
By owning your workflow, you gain:
- Predictability: Consistent deployment behavior.
- Visibility: Clear logs and status for every step.
- Control: The ability to intervene, re-run, or cancel as needed.
- Customization: Tailor the build process to your specific needs.
These benefits are invaluable for any team serious about optimizing their CI/CD pipeline and achieving their strategic okr examples software development goals.
Conclusion
While the "stuck in queued" GitHub Pages deployment can be a frustrating hurdle, the community has provided clear, actionable solutions. From immediate force-cancellation via the API to the long-term strategic advantage of adopting custom GitHub Actions workflows, teams have pathways to regain control and ensure their static sites deploy reliably. Embracing these practices not only resolves immediate issues but also strengthens your overall deployment health and provides more accurate github metrics, paving the way for smoother, more efficient software delivery.
