If you have several debts — a couple of credit cards, a car loan, maybe a personal or student loan — the question isn't only how much to pay each month. It's which debt gets the extra money first. The two most popular answers are the debt snowball and the debt avalanche. Both work. They just optimise for different things.
This guide explains each method, shows how they compare, and helps you choose. You can also plug your own numbers into our free snowball vs avalanche calculator and see the difference instantly.
The shared foundation: minimums plus extra
Both methods follow the same basic rules:
- Pay the minimum on every debt, every month. Missing minimums can bring fees, penalty interest and damage to your credit record.
- Find an extra amount you can put toward debt each month, on top of the minimums. Even a modest extra amount makes a real difference over time.
- Send all of the extra to one target debt until it's gone.
- Roll over. When a debt is paid off, take its minimum payment plus the extra and send it to the next target. Your total monthly payment stays the same, but more of it attacks the remaining debts. This rolling effect is where the "snowball" name comes from — and it applies to both methods.
The only difference between the two methods is the order of the target debts.
The debt snowball: smallest balance first
With the snowball, you list your debts from smallest balance to largest, regardless of interest rate. The extra money goes to the smallest balance first.
Why people like it: you get quick wins. Clearing a small debt in the first few months gives you one less bill, one less statement, and a real sense of progress. For many people, motivation is the biggest obstacle to getting out of debt, and the snowball is designed around that. Fewer open accounts also means less to keep track of.
The trade-off: if a large debt also has a high interest rate, it keeps growing while you're busy with the small ones, so you may pay more interest in total.
The debt avalanche: highest interest rate first
With the avalanche, you list your debts from highest interest rate (APR) to lowest, regardless of balance. The extra money goes to the most expensive debt first.
Why people like it: mathematically, it minimises the total interest you pay, and it's usually the same speed or faster to become completely debt-free. Every extra dollar, pound or euro goes where it saves the most.
The trade-off: if your highest-rate debt is also a big one, it can take a long time before you close your first account. Some people lose momentum during that stretch.
A worked example
Let's take a made-up household with four debts and an extra 300 per month (any currency):
- Credit card A: 4,200 balance at 22.9% APR, minimum 110
- Credit card B: 1,350 at 18.9%, minimum 40
- Personal loan: 3,100 at 11.9%, minimum 120
- Medical bill: 650 at 0%, minimum 50
With the snowball, the medical bill goes first (smallest balance), then card B, then the personal loan, then card A. With the avalanche, card A goes first (highest APR), then card B, then the personal loan, then the 0% medical bill.
In a case like this, the avalanche typically ends up with less total interest, because the 22.9% card shrinks sooner. The snowball, on the other hand, clears the medical bill within the first few months — a visible early win.
Rather than trusting any example (including ours), put your real balances, rates and minimums into the calculator. It runs both methods side by side month by month, including the rollover, and shows you the debt-free date and total interest for each.
How to choose
Ask yourself these questions honestly:
- Have you started and stopped paying off debt before? If motivation has been the problem, the snowball's early wins may be worth the extra interest.
- Is the interest difference large? If the avalanche saves a significant amount, it's hard to ignore. If the gap is small, pick the one you'll stick to.
- Are your interest rates similar? If all your debts have similar APRs, the two methods give similar results, and the snowball's quick wins come almost free.
- Do you have one very high-rate debt? A card at a high APR is expensive to leave growing. Many people choose avalanche in that situation.
There's also a hybrid: start with the snowball to knock out one or two tiny balances quickly, then switch to avalanche for the rest. The best plan is the one you'll actually follow for months or years.
How to find the extra money
The extra monthly payment is what drives both methods. Some common places people find it:
- Review subscriptions and recurring charges you've forgotten about.
- Use a paycheck-by-paycheck plan so every pay day has a purpose. Our article on budgeting paycheck to paycheck explains how.
- Direct windfalls — tax refunds, bonuses, gifts, selling unused items — straight to the target debt.
- Avoid adding new debt. Paying down cards while still using them for everyday spending slows everything down.
Mistakes that slow down debt payoff
- Skipping minimums on non-target debts. Always pay every minimum.
- Not rolling payments over. When a debt is gone, its payment must go to the next debt, not back into spending. This is the engine of both methods.
- Ignoring irregular bills. An annual insurance premium or car repair that arrives unplanned often ends up on a credit card. Small sinking funds prevent that — see sinking funds for beginners.
- No emergency cushion. Many people keep a small starter emergency fund while paying off debt, so a surprise expense doesn't undo months of progress.
- Not tracking progress. Seeing balances fall is motivating. A simple payoff schedule keeps you going.
What about consolidation or balance transfers?
Some people consider moving debts to a lower-rate loan or a balance-transfer card. These can reduce interest, but they come with fees, promotional periods that end, and eligibility rules that depend on your credit and your country. Read the terms carefully and, if unsure, speak with a free non-profit debt advice service in your country. Snowball and avalanche work regardless — you can apply either method to whatever debts you end up with.
Track it month by month
The calculator is great for comparing methods, but real life changes: rates move, you add extra payments, you pay a debt off early. A spreadsheet that recalculates your plan when you update balances keeps you on track — whether you build your own or use a template.
The bottom line
The avalanche usually saves the most money; the snowball usually gives the fastest early wins. Both use the same powerful idea: pay every minimum, throw everything extra at one target, and roll payments forward. Run your numbers, pick a method, and start this month.
