Dubai's Night Beaches Explained: Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah and Khor Al Mamzar After Dark
Dubai does something unusual with its coastline: at four designated beaches, swimming never closes. Umm Suqeim 1, Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and the new Khor Al Mamzar night beach run floodlit, buoy-marked swimming zones with certified lifeguards on duty 24 hours a day β and entry is free. This explainer covers how the system works, beach by beach, plus the rules, the reported AED 500 fine for swimming after dark elsewhere, and the facilities you can actually expect at 11pm.
The Four Beaches Where Night Swimming Is Legal
Umm Suqeim 1 is the original β night swimming launched here in 2017, making it one of the world's first smart beaches. Twelve-metre solar-and-wind "Smart Power" poles light roughly 125 metres of shoreline and 30 metres of sea. The old midnight cutoff was removed in late 2024, so the lit zone now runs effectively 24/7 β and you get the Burj Al Arab glowing on the skyline while you swim. Facilities include showers, changing rooms, toilets, free WiFi, a beach library and food trucks along the promenade.
Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3 joined the programme in May 2023 with the same formula: floodlit zones, electronic safety screens and 24-hour lifeguard coverage. Jumeirah 2 is the quickest reach from central Dubai; Jumeirah 3 is the quieter pick on weeknights.
Khor Al Mamzar is the newest β a 300-metre 24/7 night beach that opened on 5 May 2026 as phase one of the AED 500-million Al Mamzar redevelopment, which adds 3.6km of swimming shoreline, a floating walkway and 12 lifeguard towers. It also includes a dedicated women-only stretch with female lifeguards and a strict no-photography rule. The full beach-by-beach breakdown, including facilities and the newest changes, is in our full guide to Dubai's night beaches.
The Kite Beach Question
Everyone asks about Kite Beach, because it sits on the same Umm Suqeim stretch and stays lively after dark. The answer matters: Kite Beach itself is not an officially designated night-swimming zone. The legal, lit, lifeguarded zone is at nearby Umm Suqeim 1 β walk along the promenade to the marked area with the light poles and lifeguard towers and swim inside it. Kite Beach does have its own after-dark sporting life during Dubai Fitness Challenge season, when its shoreline hosts a major Fitness Village β Fitness Villages: what's confirmed for 2026 explains what is confirmed for this year and what is still expected.
The Rules (and the Fine)
- Swim only inside the lit, buoy-marked zones, and obey the flag system β a red flag means no swimming, day or night.
- Lifeguards can ask you to leave the water; swimming after dark outside the zones can lead to a fine of up to AED 500 (reported by third-party guides; Dubai Municipality has not published an official figure).
- Children must be supervised at all times, and public decorum rules apply at night too β no pets on the sand, no littering, modest swimwear.
- The zones are accessible for People of Determination, with ramps and floating wheelchairs.
Practicalities: Cost, Facilities, Getting There
Entry to all four night beaches is free. The main beaches provide showers, changing cabins, toilets and free WiFi; Umm Suqeim 1 adds the library and food-truck promenade. What you cannot do at Umm Suqeim is rent sunbeds or umbrellas, so bring a towel, a change of clothes and drinking water. Parking near Umm Suqeim is limited and paid, and the nearest metro station is about 4km away β for Umm Suqeim 1, ride the Red Line to Mall of the Emirates and take a 10-minute taxi. Khor Al Mamzar sits in Deira near Al Mamzar Beach Park, a short taxi ride from the Green Line around Al Qusais.
When to Go
Night beaches are at their best from October to April, when evenings are warm but not punishing and the sea stays comfortable after dark. In the June-September summer the air can still be above 35Β°C at midnight; the water will cool you down, but hydrate and do not overdo it. Weeknights are noticeably quieter than Thursday and Friday nights at Umm Suqeim 1, and during Ramadan beach hours are unchanged β just keep noise down and dress modestly, as always. Inside the zones, it genuinely is safe by design β bright lighting, marked perimeters, certified lifeguards around the clock β provided you respect the buoys and skip the solo 3am swim.
The Women-Only Stretch β and What Comes Next
Khor Al Mamzar's dedicated women-only stretch, staffed by female lifeguards and protected by a strict no-photography rule, makes night swimming accessible to women who would not use a mixed beach after dark. It is only phase one: a world's-first fully 24/7 ladies-only night beach is planned for the Al Mamzar Corniche as phase two of the redevelopment. No opening date has been confirmed for that yet β treat it as expected, not scheduled β but the direction of travel is clear: Dubai is building night swimming into a permanent part of its coastline, not a seasonal experiment.
Quick Answers
Can I swim at Kite Beach at night?
Not legally β Kite Beach is not a designated zone. Use Umm Suqeim 1, a short walk along the same shoreline.
Are the night beaches free?
Yes. Entry, showers, toilets and WiFi at the main beaches are free; parking nearby is paid.
Is it safe to swim at 2am?
Inside the lit zones, the setup is designed for it: floodlights, marked perimeters and lifeguards on towers all night. Stay inside the buoys and respect the flags.
