Before you widen a pattern that never matches, one command tells you whether the text it is looking for ever reaches it. It would have stopped me shipping a fix that changed nothing.

The detector that never fired
At Pulsed Media an automated job calls an upstream service and writes everything to a run log. When the upstream service refuses with a rate-limit error, a small detector is supposed to spot that in the log, so the run is recorded as "the service said not now" instead of "this piece of work failed". The difference matters: a failure counts against the work item, a refusal says nothing about it.
The detector had never fired. I found the rate-limit error in two real logs, written in a shape the detector's pattern did not match, and the fix looked obvious: add the second shape to the pattern. I wrote the patch.
The review asked one question I had not: where in the file does that error actually sit, compared with the part of the file the detector reads?
Nineteen kilobytes from the end
The detector did not read the whole log. It read the last 2,000 characters, a reasonable choice when the error is the last thing a failing run prints. Stripped down, it had this shape:
$tail = substr($log, -2000); // the window
if (preg_match('/rate limit/i', $tail)) { // the predicate (simplified)
markRefusedUpstream();
}
It was not the last thing. On failure, the job echoes the entire failing command back into the log, after the error line, and that command was about 17 KB long. I measured the real log: the error appeared twice, 19,418 and 19,269 bytes before the end of a 99,433-byte file.
So no pattern could have matched. The detector was looking at the last 2 KB, and the error was about 19 KB from the end. My patch would have applied cleanly, looked right in review, and changed nothing. Worse, it would have closed the finding: the next time the error appeared, everyone would have believed the detector had been fixed.
A matcher has two halves
Every log matcher, alert rule or "scan the output for X" check has two parts:
- the predicate: what it looks for (the regex, the string, the error code);
- the window: what it looks at (the last N bytes, the last N lines, this run's output, a time range).
When a matcher stays silent, the instinct is to fix the predicate. It is the visible half, it is the code you are reading, and the failing example seems to be about it. The window is usually a constant a few lines up that nobody has questioned since it was written.
So before touching the predicate, prove the input reaches it.
Probe the window before you patch the pattern
grep -c answers "is it in the file?" That is the wrong question. The right one is "is it in the slice my code reads?" This prints how far each match sits from the end of the file:
f=run.log
n=$(stat -c %s "$f")
grep -bo 'rate limit' "$f" | awk -F: -v n="$n" '{print n-$1, "bytes from end"}'
grep -b prints the byte offset of each match, and the file size minus that offset is the distance from the end. Compare it with your window. If your code reads the last 2,000 bytes and the answer is 19,000, no change to the pattern will ever help.
You can also ask the question directly, the way the code sees it:
tail -c 2000 run.log | grep -c 'rate limit' # what a 2 KB tail window sees
tail -c 65536 run.log | grep -c 'rate limit' # what a 64 KiB window sees
On a test log built the same way, with the error followed by about 23 KB of echoed output, the first command prints 0 and the second prints 1.
Where else windows hide
The same question applies anywhere a check reads a slice instead of the whole thing:
-
Last-N-lines checks.
tail -n 50in a cron wrapper orjournalctl -n 100in a health script sees only the newest lines. Long stack traces or echoed commands push the line you care about out. - Time-range windows. An alert that looks back five minutes will not see an event logged six minutes ago, however good its query is.
-
Rotated logs. If the log rotated mid-run, the line you want may be in
run.log.1while the check readsrun.log. - Captured output. Wrappers that keep only the first or last few KB of a subprocess's output have a window too, and it is easy to forget it is there.
Each time, the probe is the same: find where the target actually is, then compare that with what the check actually reads.
Fix the window first, then the pattern, then stop relying on text
Here is the order the real fix took.
1. The window. Read this run's output, not "the end of the file". If you note the log size before the run starts, you can scan exactly what this run wrote, no matter how long it is:
start=$(stat -c %s job.log)
# ... the run appends to job.log ...
tail -c +$((start+1)) job.log | grep -c 'rate limit'
That also keeps an old run's error from being blamed on the current one. Where the start offset is not known, the fallback window grew from the last 2,000 characters to the last 64 KiB. That number fits this pipeline's logs, not yours; measure yours.
2. The predicate. Only now does adding the second error shape do anything.
3. A signal that does not depend on wording at all. Upstream error text changes without notice. The exit code and the duration do not depend on anyone's prose. In this pipeline, a run that exits non-zero within 60 seconds cannot have done any real work, so it is classified as an environmental stop whatever its error text says. The text match became the secondary signal. Again, 60 seconds is this pipeline's floor; pick the one that matches your shortest real run.
Test the buried case
The regression test that came with the fix builds a log where the target sits far from the end, then asserts the detector still finds it. In the real test the error ends up 23,524 bytes before the end of the file, far outside the old 2,000-character window, and the detector now reports it. The shape is simple enough to copy for any matcher:
- write the target line;
- append more filler than your old window could see;
- assert the matcher still fires.
A test whose input always ends with the target only proves the predicate. The buried case proves the window. It is also the test that would fail on my inert patch: the target sits far beyond a 2,000-character window, whatever the pattern says.
I wrote separately about the other half of this habit, making sure an instrument can return a positive result at all, in Your positive control passed. You were still wrong.
The takeaway
When a matcher never fires, ask where the input is before you ask what the pattern should be. One grep -b and a subtraction answer it. Fix the window, then the pattern, and give the matcher a signal that does not depend on someone else's wording.
Based on a real fix at Pulsed Media in September 2026. The log offsets above were measured on the real log, and the regression test passes on the fixed code.
