Most indie hackers chase one big product. We went the opposite direction: we built 377 free online tools — calculators, converters, generators, formatters — and gave them all away at novatix.agency/tools.
Here's what building at that volume taught us.
1. Small tools compound like interest
One age calculator gets 50 visits a month. Boring. But 377 tools × 50 visits = ~18,850 monthly visits. Each tool is a tiny SEO asset targeting long-tail keywords nobody fights over: "pakistan salary tax calculator 2026", "json to yaml converter", "image background remover free".
Nobody writes backlinks for a free tool — but Google ranks pages that answer specific queries well. We now rank for hundreds of them.
2. Ship speed beats perfection
Our rule: one tool = one focused page, client-side JS where possible, no backend. A unit converter doesn't need a database. We batch 20 tools at a time, every 48 hours. Each batch takes a day of dev work.
The tech is boring on purpose: React + Tailwind, static builds, CDN. Boring scales.
3. Free tools are the best lead magnet we ever made
Here's the part nobody talks about: every free tool page carries a soft CTA for our agency services. Someone using our invoice generator is a freelancer who might need custom software. Someone on the salary calculator is thinking about money — and might need an AI chatbot for their business.
Our agency, Novatix Agency, gets qualified inbound leads from tool traffic every week. Zero ad spend.
4. What we'd do differently
- Start with search demand, not ideas. We now check keyword volume before building. A tool nobody searches for is a dead page.
- Internal linking from day one. 377 orphan pages are weak; 377 interlinked pages are a network.
-
One canonical URL pattern.
/tools/<slug>everywhere. Consistency compounds.
The takeaway
You don't need one viral product. You need 377 small bets, shipped fast, each solving one real problem. Build the library, let SEO do the marketing, and put your paid offer one click away.
We're still shipping — batch 5 landed today. What's the smallest useful tool in your niche you could ship this weekend?
We build custom software, AI chatbots, and voice AI agents for small businesses at Novatix Agency.
