What Is a Publisher in Microsoft Power Apps?
A publisher in Microsoft Power Apps defines the identity associated with custom solution components. It includes details such as the publisher's display name, unique name, customization prefix, and optional contact information.
Publishers are particularly important when working with Dataverse-based solutions because they help maintain consistent naming conventions and reduce naming conflicts across custom components.
Step 1: Open the Publishers Section
To get started, open Microsoft Power Apps and navigate to the Solutions area.
Follow these steps:
Sign in to the Microsoft Power Apps portal.
Navigate to Solutions from the left navigation menu.
Open an existing solution or begin creating a new solution.
Locate the Publishers option in the relevant solution or environment interface.
Select New Publisher to open the publisher creation form.
You can now configure the publisher details required for your development project.
Step 2: Enter Publisher Details
In the New Publisher form, provide the required information to define your publisher.
Display Name
Enter a user-friendly name for your publisher.
Example: Project Management Services
This name helps developers and administrators recognize the organization or team responsible for the custom components.
Name
Specify a unique internal name for the publisher. Power Apps typically generates this value based on the display name.
Review the generated name and ensure it follows your organization's naming conventions.
Prefix
Enter a short customization prefix, such as pms.
This prefix is used to identify custom components associated with the publisher. For example, a custom Dataverse table might use a schema name such as pms_projects.
Choose a prefix that is meaningful, consistent, and unlikely to conflict with other publishers.
Option Value Prefix
Enter or review the numerical prefix used to generate unique values for custom choices and related components.
Power Apps generally assigns a value automatically when the publisher is created. Keep the assigned value unless your project requirements call for a different configuration.
Best practice: Choose your customization prefix carefully before developing your solution. Changing naming conventions later can complicate component management and solution maintenance.
Step 3: Add Contact Information (Optional)
You can also provide additional information to help identify the publisher and its responsible team.
Common fields include:
Contact Name: The person responsible for the publisher.
Email Address: An email address for questions or support.
Website: The organization's or project's website.
Description: A short explanation of the publisher's purpose.
Although these fields are optional, completing relevant details can improve documentation and make it easier for developers and administrators to identify the team behind a solution.
For example, you might describe the publisher as responsible for custom project management applications and related business automation components.
Step 4: Save the Publisher
Before saving, review all the information entered in the form.
Verify the following details:
Display name is clear and descriptive.
Internal name follows your naming conventions.
Customization prefix is appropriate for your project.
Option value prefix is correctly configured.
Contact information is accurate, if provided.
Once everything looks correct, click Save to create the publisher.
After creation, the publisher can be selected when configuring solutions through the applicable Power Apps workflow.
You can then use it to help maintain consistent naming conventions for custom components created as part of your development project.
Best Practices for Creating Publishers in Power Apps
Consider these recommendations when configuring publishers for your Power Platform projects:
Use meaningful prefixes: Choose a short prefix that represents your organization, team, or project.
Maintain naming consistency: Follow the same naming conventions across related solutions and components.
Avoid unnecessary duplicates: Reuse an appropriate existing publisher when it fits your project requirements.
Document publisher details: Add contact information and a description when they are useful to your team.
Plan for future development: Select a prefix that remains suitable as your application grows and new components are introduced.
Understand solution dependencies: Remember that publishers help identify custom components, while solutions organize and package those components for development and deployment.
Conclusion
Creating a new publisher in Microsoft Power Apps is an important step toward maintaining consistent naming conventions and organizing custom solution components. By configuring the display name, internal name, customization prefix, and other relevant details, you can establish a clear identity for your development project.
