Productivity advice is often about adding things: more apps, more systems, more structure. Sometimes what actually helps is removing things.
This is about removing friction from the browser — the tool most of us use for 6-8+ hours a day — and what I've learned from experimenting with browser setups over the past few years.
The Problem With Default Browser Setups
Most people's browsers are configured for general-purpose use, not for focused work. The defaults encourage:
- Constant content discovery: News feeds, suggested articles, trending topics in every new tab
- Passive consumption: Video autoplay, infinite scroll, push notifications
- Decision fatigue: Dozens of bookmarks, dozens of extensions, cluttered toolbar
A focused setup deliberately removes most of this.
What "Focus Mode" Actually Means
For my browser, focus mode means:
- No news feeds in the new tab
- No notification permissions granted (I revoke them regularly)
- Minimal bookmarks (only what I open ≥ once per week)
- uBlock Origin blocking auto-playing video and related video suggestions
- One purpose per browser container (work stays in work, personal in personal)
What I do keep visible:
- Current time (always visible in system clock, but I also check weather + world clocks)
- Weather and 3-day forecast (planning my day, especially outdoor activities)
- Search bar (fast access to what I'm actually looking for)
For this, Weather & Clock Dashboard (Firefox Add-Ons) fills the new tab with exactly those three things and nothing else. No news, no inspiration quotes, no social feed.
The Notification Audit
Run this in Firefox:
-
about:permissions→ scan the list - Revoke "Send Notifications" for every site that's not critical (I keep one calendar app and zero social apps)
Notifications are asymmetric: easy to grant, psychologically expensive to receive. Every notification is an interruption that costs more attention than the time it takes to dismiss.
I do a notification audit every 3 months. It consistently takes under 5 minutes and consistently improves focus.
Container Discipline
Firefox Multi-Account Containers is the most underrated Firefox feature for focus.
My setup:
- Work: Company tools, clients, email
- Personal: Personal email, banking, health
- Research: Sites I'm actively researching (not reading for pleasure)
- No-container: News, social, entertainment
The "no-container" category is intentional. Anything in no-container gets closed at end of day without ceremony. Work and Personal containers stay open across sessions because I need them consistently.
The cognitive benefit: when I'm in a Work container tab, I know I'm at work. When I close the Work container, work is done. The container becomes a psychological context boundary.
The Bookmark Problem
If you have 100+ bookmarks, your bookmarks aren't helping you. They're a backlog.
The test: open your bookmarks bar/folder right now. How many sites have you clicked in the last 14 days?
For most people, it's fewer than 10. I keep exactly what I've clicked in the last 7 days on the bookmark bar, nothing else.
The rest I moved to a folder called "archive" (not deleted — I might need them). I effectively never open it, but having it there prevents the anxiety of deleting.
What This Setup Enables
With the distraction removed:
- New tabs are utility, not stimulation: Opening a tab gives me weather, time, and a search box. That's it.
- Context switching is deliberate: Moving between work and personal requires opening a different container — a small friction that prevents mindless social media checks during work.
- The browser doesn't compete for attention: It's a tool, not an entertainment system.
The setup requires about 30 minutes to configure:
- Install Weather & Clock Dashboard (2 min)
- Install uBlock Origin + configure filters (5 min)
- Set up Multi-Account Containers (10 min)
- Audit notifications and bookmarks (15 min)
After that, you're in maintenance mode.
The Counter-Argument
I'm aware this setup is spartan and some people genuinely benefit from a dashboard with widgets, motivation, weather, tasks, news, and habits all visible at once.
If that's you, Notion's web clipper + a dashboard Notion page as your new tab might work better. Or a more full-featured new tab like Tabliss with everything configured.
My observation is that when I've tried feature-rich dashboards, I end up either ignoring most widgets or updating them until they stop working correctly. Simpler is more durable for me.
What's your browser focus setup? I'm curious whether others have found different approaches that work well for them.
