Explaining a Refrigeration Outage to People Who Do Not Read Advisories

Store managers, regional directors and regulators do not need a dork. They need to know whether their store is affected, what was done, and what happens next. The French incident showed how quickly that communication load arrives: five retail chains confirmed impact within days, and a government minister addressed parliament.

Separate the three audiences

Store operations want a status per site and a decision about stock. Regional management wants a count and a timeline. Regulators and prosecutors want documented actions and preserved records.
One message cannot serve all three. The technical detail that reassures a regulator is noise to a store manager.

What to say about an unconfirmed store

The honest statement is that exposure and compromise are different, and that neither is currently confirmed for this site. CERT-FR's alert does not link the compromises to any specific vulnerability, so a store running current firmware is not automatically cleared either.
Avoid two failures. Do not tell staff a site is fine because a count looked low. Do not tell them it was attacked because a controller matches a fingerprint.

Numbers, used carefully

If a figure is quoted, name its source, its query and its timestamp. For example: a ZoomEye query for title="StoreView Web" on 21 October 2026 returned 271 matching assets globally, 55 in France. That sentence is auditable. "Hundreds of vulnerable fridges" is not.

Preserve the awkward records

The Paris prosecutor's office said the attack caused fires in addition to food losses. Where an incident has a physical consequence, records that show what the organisation knew and when become part of a legal process, not just an operational log. Deleting an inconvenient dashboard is a decision with consequences.

Close the loop with stores

After containment, tell sites what changed: the controller is no longer reachable from the internet, maintenance access now runs through a gateway, and the model is scheduled for replacement. Staff who understand why the box was touched are less likely to plug it back in.
