Black Friday is November 27 this year, and holiday shopping lines get long. If your phone is buried in a bag of gifts, your Apple Watch can pay for you. Setting up Apple Pay on the watch takes a few minutes, and once it's done, paying is a double-click and a tap. This guide follows Apple's support article "Set up Apple Pay" and the Apple Watch User Guide.
What you need
Apple lists four requirements for Apple Pay:
- A compatible device with the latest version of watchOS (and iOS on the paired iPhone).
- A supported card from a participating card issuer.
- An Apple Account signed in to your device.
- A passcode set on your Apple Watch.
Apple Pay isn't available in every country or region, and your card issuer decides whether your card works with it.
Add a card from your iPhone
- On your paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- In the My Watch tab, tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap Add Card.
- Tap Debit or Credit Card to add a new card, or tap Cards Found For You to add a card you used previously.
- Tap Continue.
- Add the card: tap or hold it close to your iPhone, position it in the frame to scan it, or tap Enter Card Details Manually.
- If necessary, verify your information with the bank or card issuer.
Your issuer may ask for more information, or ask you to download its app, before approving the card.
You can also add a card on the watch itself: follow the steps on screen in the Wallet app on your Apple Watch.
Pay in a store
Apple's steps for contactless payments:
- Double-click the side button.
- Scroll to choose a card.
- Hold Apple Watch near the contactless card reader, with the display facing the reader, until a gentle tap and beep confirm the payment information was sent.
The merchant has to accept your card and payment network as well as Apple Pay.
Pay online and in apps
Holiday deals are mostly online now, and the watch helps there too:
- At checkout, tap the Apple Pay button.
- Review the payment, shipping and billing information.
- Double-click the side button to complete the payment.
Set your default card and shipping details
If you have a "holiday" card you want to use for everything this season, make it the default:
- Go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Apple Pay Defaults.
- Under Transaction defaults, set the default card, your shipping address, email and phone number.
The same screen has Allow Payments on Mac, which lets you confirm Apple Pay payments on a nearby Mac with your watch.
A Black Friday checklist
- This week: add your card and do one small test purchase, so any issuer verification is out of the way.
- Before you shop: confirm your default card and shipping address.
- At the register: double-click, then hold the display toward the reader.
- Online: check the shipping address on the Apple Pay sheet before you double-click.
Troubleshooting
- Wallet won't add the card: contact your card issuer. Apple says it's the issuer that decides compatibility.
- No Apple Pay option: make sure a passcode is set on the watch; Apple Pay needs one.
- Terminal doesn't respond: check that the store accepts Apple Pay and your card's payment network.
Going further with WatchLux
WatchLux is the watch face app I built. Apple Pay keeps you moving at checkout, and a good face keeps the rest of the day glanceable. All artwork is created with generative AI tools.
WatchLux is free to download and preview; subscription unlocks the full catalog and removes ads.
My team specializes in advanced generative AI art and video, and WatchLux and ScreenLux are where we apply it to the watch and the phone.
