If you want a general-purpose assistant that can also write a LinkedIn message, ChatGPT works well. If you write outreach regularly and want drafts built from the profile you have open, with the character limit handled, a purpose-built Chrome extension like Letter Moth saves steps. They solve overlapping problems in different ways.
This comparison is written by the Letter Moth team, so weigh it accordingly. We will say plainly where a chatbot is the better choice, because for many tasks it is. We will also explain where the workflow difference matters when you are sending ten connection notes in a sitting.
The short version: ChatGPT is a flexible chatbot you steer with prompts. Letter Moth is a narrow tool that reads the page you choose, drafts in your voice, and drops the text into the message box. It never sends anything.
What is the real difference between ChatGPT and Letter Moth?
ChatGPT is a general chatbot. You open a tab, describe the person and your goal, and it writes. It can also brainstorm, summarise, translate, write code and help with a hundred other jobs. That flexibility is its strength.
Letter Moth is a Chrome extension (it also works in Edge, Brave and Opera, but not Firefox or Safari). You write a short profile once, then click the toolbar button on a LinkedIn profile, an email box or a job form. It reads the page text you approve and drafts from that.
So the question is less which one is smarter and more where you want the work to happen: in a separate chat window, or on the page you are already looking at.

How does the copy-paste workflow compare to drafting in the page?
With a chatbot, a typical LinkedIn note looks like this: open a profile, copy the About section and headline, switch tabs, paste with instructions, wait, copy the result, switch back, paste into the note box. If it is over the limit, you go back and ask for a shorter version.
With Letter Moth the loop is: click the toolbar button, glance at the context it found, untick anything you do not want used, pick a tone and generate. The draft is inserted into the box. You edit and press send yourself.
For one message, the difference is small. For a batch of connection requests or referral asks, the saved tab switching adds up.
Does Letter Moth handle the LinkedIn character limit better?
Connection notes have a tight cap, and a chatbot does not know which cap applies to the box you are looking at. You can tell it a number, and it will usually get close, but you may need a round or two of trimming.
Letter Moth reads the character limit of the box and trims the draft to fit. If you want the background on limits, see the LinkedIn connection note character limit guide.
This is a convenience, not magic. You should still read the result, since a trimmed message can lose a detail you cared about.
Which one keeps you more in control and protects your privacy?
With a chatbot you decide exactly what you paste, which is a real form of control. Check the provider's own settings and policy for how conversations are handled.
Letter Moth reads page text only when you click the toolbar button or use the right-click menu in a text box. You see the context first and can untick parts of it. It never reads password or payment fields. The page text goes to our server and the AI provider only to write that draft, is not sold, and is not kept after the draft is made.
Neither tool should send messages for you, and Letter Moth does not: no sending, no clicking, no bulk sending, no scraping or automation.
How do the two compare side by side?
Here is a plain summary. Chatbot products change often, so verify the details on OpenAI's own site before deciding.
What does each cost, and what does Letter Moth not do?
For ChatGPT, check OpenAI's site for current plans and pricing; we will not quote numbers that may be out of date. Letter Moth has a free plan with 10 drafts a day and 3 saved prompts, no card needed. Pro gives unlimited drafts and saved prompts for INR 299 for 30 days or INR 2,499 for a year, paid by UPI, card or net banking. It never auto-renews, and there is a 7-day refund on your first Pro purchase. Details are on the pricing section.
Now the limits. Letter Moth is early and focused. It does not write essays, code or long-form content, it has no CRM, no sequences, no analytics and no email finding. If you want a Swiss army knife, use a chatbot. If you want faster, more consistent outreach drafts, try the LinkedIn message generator or add Letter Moth to Chrome.
FAQ
Can I just use ChatGPT for LinkedIn messages?
Yes, plenty of people do. You paste in profile details and ask for a short note. The tradeoffs are the extra copy-paste steps and having to manage the character limit yourself. If you only send a few messages a month, that is fine.
Is Letter Moth better than ChatGPT?
Not in general. ChatGPT does far more. For the narrow job of drafting outreach from the page you have open, in the box, in your voice, Letter Moth may be faster. Try both on a real message and see which you prefer.
Does Letter Moth send LinkedIn messages for me?
No. It inserts a draft into the box and stops there. You read, edit and send. It does not click, automate, scrape or bulk send.
Will the messages sound like me?
You write a profile once, and your name and role go into every draft. Tone options include natural, professional, casual, warm and concise. Always edit before sending. Our guide on making AI-written messages sound human has practical tips.
Is it free to try Letter Moth?
Yes. The free plan gives 10 drafts a day with no card. If it helps your outreach, you can add Letter Moth to Chrome and try it on your next few connection requests.
