You connect your wallet to a decentralized exchange, approve a token, complete a swap, and leave the website. Everything seems fine, so you move on.
But there is a detail many crypto users overlook: disconnecting your wallet from a website does not necessarily revoke the permissions you previously granted to its smart contracts.
These are two different mechanisms. Understanding the difference can help you reduce unnecessary exposure without giving up the convenience of using decentralized applications.
What Happens When You Approve a Smart Contract?
Many decentralized applications need permission to interact with your tokens. On Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks, ERC-20 tokens commonly use an approve function to let another address spend tokens on your behalf.
For example, when you trade a token on a decentralized exchange, you may authorize a contract to spend a certain amount of that token. The contract can then use transferFrom to move tokens within the limits of the allowance.
Some applications request an allowance larger than the amount you intend to trade. In certain cases, users approve an effectively unlimited amount to avoid repeating the approval process for future transactions.
That permission can remain active after you finish using the application.
According to the ERC-20 token standard, token approvals and transfers are separate functions. This distinction is central to understanding why an old approval deserves attention.
An approval does not automatically mean that a contract is malicious. Legitimate applications use allowances as part of normal operation. The risk comes from granting permissions you do not need, or leaving them active when you no longer trust or use the spender.
Why Disconnecting Your Wallet Is Not Enough
Disconnecting a wallet usually ends the website's active connection to your wallet interface. It does not automatically change the approval recorded by the token's smart contract.
Imagine that you approved a decentralized application to spend 1,000 USDC but only traded 50 USDC. If the remaining allowance is still active, the approved spender may retain permission to transfer eligible tokens up to the remaining allowance, subject to the token contract's rules and your available balance.
If the spender is compromised or turns out to be malicious, an active allowance can create a potential path to loss.
This is one way smart contract approval vulnerabilities can be exploited. Attackers may use malicious decentralized applications to trick users into granting permissions, or exploit compromised protocols whose contracts already have access to user funds. Phishing websites can also disguise approval requests as routine actions, making it difficult for users to recognize what they are authorizing.
Wallet security therefore involves more than protecting a seed phrase or checking whether a website is still connected.
There is also an important distinction between token approvals and NFT operator permissions. For example, the ERC-721 standard includes setApprovalForAll, which can grant an operator permission to manage all NFTs of a particular collection held by an owner. That is a broader permission than approving a single NFT.
You can read more about this mechanism in the ERC-721 standard.
How to Review and Revoke Unnecessary Approvals
A simple security routine can help you identify permissions that are no longer necessary.
- Check your active allowances. Use a reputable approval checker that supports the network you use. Verify the network and token contract before interacting with any tool.
- Review the spender address. Check whether the approval belongs to an application you recognize and still intend to use. A familiar name alone is not proof that an address is legitimate.
- Reduce unnecessary permissions. Where supported, consider limiting an allowance to the amount you actually need rather than granting unlimited access.
- Revoke approvals you no longer need. Use your wallet's supported functionality or a reputable network-specific tool. Revocation generally requires an on-chain transaction and may involve a network fee.
- Verify the result. After the transaction is confirmed, check the allowance or approval status again. For ERC-20 tokens, a successful revocation commonly sets the allowance to zero.
One final precaution: be careful when using approval-management websites. A malicious site can create a new security problem while you are trying to solve an old one. Verify the domain, inspect transaction details, and never share your seed phrase.
Conclusion
Crypto security is not just about preventing unauthorized access to your wallet. It is also about understanding the permissions you have already granted.
Disconnecting a website is useful, but it should not be treated as a substitute for managing smart contract approvals. An old allowance may remain active even after you stop using an application, leaving your assets exposed if the approved spender becomes malicious or is compromised.
Reviewing token allowances and NFT permissions periodically is a practical way to reduce unnecessary risk. Before approving a transaction, take a moment to understand what you are authorizing, who receives that permission, and whether it is necessary.
