Subaru is phasing out gasoline vehicles in Europe by late 2027 to meet EU emissions targets and safety mandates, transitioning to an EV lineup and developing its own proprietary electric vehicle platform and software architecture.
Which models are being retired and when?
The first gasoline model to be discontinued in Europe is the Outback, at the end of this year. The Impreza, Crosstrek and Forester models will follow in 2027. From 2028, the company will offer three electric models in the European Union: the Solterra, E-Outback and Uncharted. The current electric models were developed in collaboration with Toyota and are based on its own vehicles.
The change due to European Union rules
This change is due to new European Union rules on emissions and driver assistance systems. From 2025 to 2034, cars must emit an average of 93,6 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. In addition, from July 7, 2026, the European Union will require distraction warning systems and improved emergency braking.
On Sunday, Subaru announced that it will develop its own electric car technology separately from Toyota for its future vehicles. According to the company's vice president of engineering, Takatomo Watamori, the new platform includes a new battery, electric motor technology and a central control unit that allows for remote software updates.
