The GitLab Way: How We Scaled Autonomous Problem-Solving with MVC, Boring Solutions, and the GitLab CLI

When engineers think of GitLab, they usually think of a CI/CD powerhouse or an all-in-one DevOps platform. But behind GitLab’s 100% remote, thousands-strong engineering organization lies one of the most rigorously documented, efficient software engineering cultures on the planet: The GitLab Engineering Handbook.

At the heart of GitLab’s culture are principles like Minimum Viable Change (MVC), "Choose Boring Solutions", Single Source of Truth (SSOT), and Asynchronous-First Communication.

If you're using modern AI coding agents (like Google DeepMind’s Antigravity, Claude Code, or Cursor) or leading an engineering squad, applying GitLab’s exact problem-solving culture eliminates common pitfalls: runaway refactoring, bloated pull requests, stalled code reviews, and broken CI pipelines.

Here is an end-to-end blueprint on how GitLab actually works, how to translate their guidelines into autonomous problem-solving, and a complete cheat sheet for modern glab terminal commands.

🏛️ 1. The Core GitLab Engineering Principles

GitLab’s engineering philosophy is anchored in their CREDIT values (Collaboration, Results, Efficiency, Diversity/Inclusion/Belonging, Iteration, Transparency). When translated to solving an issue or writing code, three pillars dominate:

flowchart TD
    subgraph GitLab Culture Core
    A["Iteration & MVC<br/>(Cut scope to the smallest step that delivers value)"]
    B["Choose Boring Solutions<br/>(Prefer standard libs & proven patterns over novelty)"]
    C["SSOT & Async-First<br/>(Issue thread is the permanent record)"]
    end
    A --> D[Fast Review Cycles & Low Bug Rate]
    B --> D
    C --> D

Pillar I: Minimum Viable Change (MVC)

• The Philosophy: Don’t wait for a feature or bug fix to be 100% polished before getting feedback. What is the smallest increment that delivers real value and validates the fix?
• Scope Trimming: If a fix touches 15 files, can it be sliced into 3 sequential MRs? Smaller MRs get reviewed in minutes, merge safely, and don't stall.
• Deferred Polish: If you have to sacrifice a minor UI polish or edge-case handling to ship the core fix today, document it immediately as a follow-up issue with the label ~"Deferred UX" or ~"technical debt".

Pillar II: "Choose Boring Solutions"

• The Philosophy: The best code is simple, unexciting, and obvious. Cleverness is a liability in production.
• Application: Use standard library primitives, reuse existing helpers in the codebase, and avoid adding third-party packages or speculative architecture. If a standard SQL query or regex works, don’t build a custom abstraction layer.

Pillar III: Single Source of Truth (SSOT) & Asynchronous Context

• The Philosophy: If a decision isn't documented in the issue or handbook, it didn't happen.
• Application: No tribal knowledge or back-and-forth Slack debates. Every issue must contain full reproduction steps, logs, expected behavior, and architectural decisions directly in the thread.

💻 2. The Modern Command-Line Stack: glab & Git Worktrees

GitLab engineers live in the terminal. Using the official GitLab CLI (glab) alongside Git Worktrees allows you to navigate issues, branches, code reviews, and pipelines with zero friction.

A. Authentication & Environment

# Authenticate with GitLab.com or a self-managed instance
glab auth login

# Verify your identity and permissions
glab auth status

B. Git Worktrees: The Ultimate Branch Isolation

Instead of git stash and switching branches, use Git Worktrees to run multiple issues in parallel isolated directories:

# 1. Fetch latest remote state
git fetch origin

# 2. Spin up an isolated worktree for Issue #1042
git worktree add ../issue-1042-auth-fix -b fix/issue-1042-auth-token-drift origin/main

# 3. Enter the clean workspace
cd ../issue-1042-auth-fix

# (When work is complete and merged, clean up easily)
cd ../main-repo
git worktree remove ../issue-1042-auth-fix

C. Issue Management with glab

# View details, labels, and discussions for an issue directly in terminal
glab issue view 1042

# List open issues assigned to you
glab issue list --assignee=@me

# Add notes or progress updates asynchronously
glab issue note 1042 -m "Investigated root cause: token expiration drift identified in auth_service.py"

D. GitLab Quick Actions inside Commits & Comments

GitLab supports powerful text macros called Quick Actions. Prepend these with / on their own line in MR descriptions or comments:

Closes #1042

### Changes
- Fixed JWT expiration calculation using UTC timestamps.

/assign me
/label ~"bug" ~"backend" ~"severity::2"
/estimate 2h
/spend 45m
/milestone %"v14.2"

E. Merge Request (MR) Lifecycle with glab

# 1. Create a Draft MR early for team visibility (Handbook recommendation)
glab mr create \
  --draft \
  --title "Draft: Fix auth token expiration drift" \
  --description "Closes #1042. Slices out UTC timestamp fix as an MVC." \
  --assignee @me \
  --target-branch main

# 2. Inspect MR diffs locally
glab mr diff

# 3. Monitor remote CI/CD pipelines
glab ci status
glab ci trace # Stream live job output directly in terminal

# 4. Mark ready for review once tests & CI are green
glab mr update --ready

🤖 3. The 7-Step Autonomous Resolution Protocol (AI & Human Pair-Programming)

Whether you are an engineer or orchestrating an autonomous coding agent like Antigravity, adhere strictly to this loop:

flowchart TD
    A["1. FETCH: Query Issue & Comments via GitLab MCP / glab"] --> B["2. ISOLATE: Worktree or Feature Branch"]
    B --> C["3. PLAN: Scope MVC & Choose Boring Solution"]
    C --> D["4. IMPLEMENT: Minimal Surgical Code Change"]
    D --> E["5. VERIFY: Run Local Tests & Pre-commit Hooks"]
    E --> F["6. REVIEW: Diff Audit & Lint Check"]
    F --> G["7. PUSH & MR: glab mr create with Closes #ID"]

1. Fetch Full Context First: Never write code from an issue title alone. Read the description, recent comments, reproduction logs, and associated labels using glab issue view <id> or the GitLab MCP server.
2. Isolate with Worktrees: Create a dedicated branch from clean main: fix/issue-<id>-<summary>. Never touch protected branches.
3. Plan the MVC: Ask: "What is the minimum viable change that solves this issue?" Avoid drive-by refactorings. Select the simplest "boring" solution.
4. Implement Surgically: Write clean, idiomatic code adhering to codebase conventions. No speculative abstractions.
5. Deterministic Verification: Execute the local test suite and syntax linters. Verify that edge cases are covered by at least one reproducible test.
6. Self-Review: Inspect git diff or run /code-review. Verify no secrets, .env files, or unintended files are staged.
7. Draft MR & Auto-Close: Publish the MR using glab mr create --draft. Link the issue with Closes #<id> so merging resolves the issue automatically.

🎯 Summary Takeaway

By combining GitLab’s Handbook principles (MVC + Boring Solutions) with modern tooling (glab + Git Worktrees), teams eliminate development chaos:

• MRs stay small and reviewable.
• Solutions stay maintainable because they avoid unneeded dependencies.
• Git trees stay pristine through isolated worktrees.
• Knowledge stays centralized in issues and MRs rather than scattered across private chat messages.

Adopt these guidelines in your daily engineering routine—or paste them into your AI pair programmer’s system prompt—and watch your cycle time plummet.
