On a hill in south-eastern Zimbabwe, near the town of Masvingo, there is a wall that has stood for around 700 years without a drop of mortar.
It belongs to the Great Enclosure, the largest single structure at Great Zimbabwe. Its outer wall curves for roughly 250 metres and rises to about 11 metres in places. Every block of granite was shaped and fitted by hand, course on course, so that the wall holds itself up by fit alone. Inside stands a solid conical tower, still a mystery in purpose, still standing.
The city it belonged to was the capital of a kingdom that flourished between about the 11th and 15th centuries. It was built by the ancestors of today's Shona people. That last sentence took the outside world nearly a hundred years to accept.
A city at the centre of a trade network
Great Zimbabwe sat on the plateau between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers, inland from the Indian Ocean coast. Its rulers controlled cattle, farmland and, crucially, access to gold from the plateau. That gold travelled to coastal ports such as Sofala and on to Kilwa, the great Swahili trading city, and from there across the Indian Ocean.
The evidence of that reach was found in the ground at Great Zimbabwe itself: glass beads, Persian and Chinese ceramics, and a copper coin minted in Kilwa. At its height the site and its surrounding settlement spread over almost 800 hectares, according to UNESCO, which made it a World Heritage Site in 1986.
Its most famous objects are eight carved soapstone birds, each set on a tall column. One of them now sits on Zimbabwe's flag. The country itself is named after the site: dzimba dza mabwe, usually translated as "houses of stone".
The century of denial
When the German explorer Karl Mauch reached the ruins in 1871, he decided they could not be African work. He linked them to the Queen of Sheba and the biblical land of Ophir. Others followed with Phoenicians, Arabs, anyone but the people who lived there. Early digging in the 1890s, by Theodore Bent and later by treasure-seekers, stripped away layers of the very evidence that could have settled the question.
The question was settled anyway. In 1905 the archaeologist David Randall-MacIver studied the site and concluded it was medieval and African. In 1929 Gertrude Caton-Thompson, sent by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, dug carefully, dated what she found and came to the same conclusion, in plain terms.
It didn't end the myth. It suited the settler government of Rhodesia to believe that Africans had not built the country's greatest monument. Archaeologists working there in the 1960s and 70s later described being pressed to soften or avoid saying who the builders were. Peter Garlake, who had served as the government's Inspector of Monuments, left Rhodesia in 1970 after he refused to go along with it. The truth about Great Zimbabwe became official only with independence in 1980, when the new nation took the city's name.
Evidence outlasts opinion
What strikes me most is not the denial. It is how the evidence kept winning, slowly, every time someone looked at it carefully.
The builders left no written records, so the stones had to speak for them. The style of the walls matched other stone sites across the plateau. The objects matched the region's trade. The dates matched an African kingdom, not an ancient Middle Eastern one. Opinions came and went with politics. The physical record stayed where it was.
What Great Zimbabwe teaches a company
Many businesses know a version of this story. A buyer abroad assumes your product must have been made somewhere else. An investor assumes your numbers are too good to be yours. A partner doubts you built the system you are showing them.
You cannot argue your way out of that kind of doubt. Great Zimbabwe's defenders didn't win with speeches; they won with careful records, dates and objects in the ground. A modern company's equivalent is a traceable batch record, a timestamped audit trail, a test certificate, a supplier list that ties every input to its source. Provenance, in other words.
The second lesson is in the wall itself. It has no mortar. It stands because each stone was fitted to the next with care. Strong organisations work the same way: not glued together by one heroic person, but built from many well-fitted parts that hold each other up.
And the third lesson is a warning. Early treasure-hunters destroyed the layers that would have proved the truth sooner. Evidence you don't protect is evidence you lose. Records thrown away, systems never backed up, history never written down: each makes it easier for someone else to tell your story for you.
For builders: provenance is a feature, not a report
Great Zimbabwe's builders left no documents, so the case rested on what survived: wall styles, datable layers, traded objects. Treasure-hunters who dug carelessly in the 1890s destroyed layers that could have ended the argument decades earlier. Software has the same failure mode. If records can be edited without a trace, if inputs aren't linked to their sources, or if logs are rotated away, you are the treasure-hunter digging through your own evidence. Make provenance structural: every record carries who, when and from what, and nothing is overwritten, only appended.
So here is the question the builders of Great Zimbabwe leave us: if someone doubted that your business did what it says it does, what evidence could you put on the table tomorrow?
