Figma co-founder Dylan Field has voiced concerns over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), arguing that the standard is currently incomplete and favors large AI labs.
His critique focuses on limited resource accessibility from the protocol's creator, Anthropic.
Learn how these concerns regarding data security and openness are shaping Figma's strategy as they look toward alternative tools like Pi.
New collaborations and reactions
At a company conference in India, Figma announced 20 new partners that will use MCP, including Notion, ClickUp, and Linear. While the company is moving forward with this adoption, Field called the model imperfect. In his view, MCP primarily favors large AI labs and not necessarily the industry as a whole.
Criticism of Anthropic
Field criticized Anthropic, the company that created the MCP. Specifically, he wondered why Anthropic itself does not make all of its resources available through the protocol it promotes, leaving hints about the way the creator of the standard chooses to implement it.
Why Figma remains cautious
Figma intends to support the open Pi tool, but it has chosen not to fully open its systems to any external connection. Field explained that this decision stems from concerns about data security. The more information is connected to external tools, the greater the risk of potential misuse of user data, which forces the company to remain cautious.
