Two people can type a similar idea into an AI video generator and get very different results. One gets a smooth, cinematic shot. The other gets a wobbly clip where nothing seems to happen. The difference is almost always the prompt.
This guide collects practical text-to-video prompting techniques that consistently help, with before-and-after examples. You can try them on Pixwit's text-to-video generator, which lets you run the same prompt across several models, but the ideas carry over to almost any modern video model.
1. Think like a director, not a novelist
Video models respond best to concrete, visual instructions. Skip backstory and emotion you can't see. Describe what the camera sees and how it moves.
- Before: "A lonely man thinks about his past."
- After: "A middle-aged man sits alone at a diner counter at night, stirring coffee slowly; neon light through rain-streaked windows; slow push-in on his face."
2. Use a consistent prompt structure
A reliable order is:
Shot type → subject → action → setting → lighting → camera move → style
Example:
Medium close-up of a young chef plating a dessert, sprinkling powdered sugar, in a busy restaurant kitchen, warm tungsten light, slow dolly left, shallow depth of field, cinematic.
Once you have a structure, you can swap one slot at a time and learn what each part does.
3. One main action per clip
Most generations are only a few seconds long. Asking for "she walks in, sits down, opens a laptop, and answers a call" crams four beats into five seconds. Pick one: "she opens a laptop and smiles at the screen." Chain separate clips if you need a sequence.
4. Name the camera move explicitly
Camera language is one of the most effective levers you have:
- Push-in / dolly-in: builds intensity
- Pull-back: reveals context
- Orbit: shows off a product or character
- Tracking shot: follows a moving subject
- Crane up / drone rise: establishes a location
- Static, locked-off: keeps attention on the action
If the tool offers a camera-direction setting (Pixwit does, under "choose and direct"), use it together with the prompt.
5. Specify lighting
Lighting does most of the work in making a clip feel professional. Try "golden hour backlight", "overcast soft light", "harsh midday sun", "neon magenta and cyan", or "single candle, deep shadows." A prompt that gives no lighting usually gets flat, generic light.
6. Add texture with lens and film terms
Words like "35mm film grain", "anamorphic lens flare", "shallow depth of field", "macro lens", or "shot on a phone, vertical" nudge the aesthetic strongly. Use one or two, not ten.
7. Describe motion with strong verbs
"Moving" and "doing something" are vague. "Sprints", "drifts", "spins", "ripples", "shatters", and "unfurls" are clear.
- Before: "A flag moving."
- After: "A huge red flag unfurls and snaps in strong wind against a stormy sky."
8. Control the pace
Words like "slow motion", "time-lapse", "gentle", "frantic", and "real-time" change the energy of a clip a lot. For product and beauty shots, "slow, smooth motion" almost always helps.
9. Keep negative instructions short and positive where possible
Many models handle "no text, no extra people" poorly. It works better to say what you do want: "an empty beach" instead of "a beach with no people."
10. Match the aspect ratio to the platform first
Set the format before you write the prompt, because composition changes. A 9:16 vertical clip needs the subject centered and framed taller. A 16:9 clip can use wide, horizontal compositions. Pixwit's default is 16:9 at 5 seconds; switch to vertical for Shorts and Reels.
11. Compare models with the same prompt
Different models read prompts differently. Some follow instructions closely, some lean cinematic, some handle people better, and some add native audio. Keep your prompt fixed and run it on two or three models. Having multiple models in one place is the main reason to use an aggregator for this kind of test instead of juggling separate accounts.
12. Iterate one variable at a time
When a result is close but not right, change just one thing: the camera move, the lighting, or the action verb. If you rewrite everything, you'll never know what helped.
Ready-to-use prompt examples
Copy these, then adapt them:
Product ad
Close-up of a matte black wireless earbud case on a wet stone surface, lid slowly opens, water droplets glisten, dark studio with a single rim light, slow orbit, ultra-clean commercial style.
Travel b-roll
Aerial drone shot rising over terraced rice fields at sunrise, mist drifting through the valleys, warm golden light, smooth slow ascent, cinematic.
Food content
Overhead shot of a hand drizzling honey onto a stack of pancakes, honey flowing in slow motion, bright morning kitchen light, shallow depth of field.
Short story beat
A detective in a trench coat steps out of a dark alley into a pool of streetlight, rain falling, he lifts his head toward the camera, low angle, noir style, high contrast.
Social hook
Vertical shot, a cat in sunglasses sits on a tiny skateboard rolling down a sunny boardwalk, people blurred in the background, handheld tracking shot, playful, bright colors.
Nature loop
Static shot of a mossy forest stream, water flowing over smooth rocks, sun rays through the canopy, gentle and calm, photorealistic.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Overloading the prompt. Twenty adjectives fight each other.
- Contradictions. "Bright sunny night" or "static camera orbiting" confuse the model.
- Expecting readable text. Small on-screen text still breaks often in video. Add titles in an editor afterwards.
- Skipping the review. Watch at full size and check hands, faces, and edges before publishing.
When to switch to image-to-video
If you need a specific face, product, or layout, text-to-video can only approximate it. Generate or upload a still image first, then animate it. You get much more control over the first frame and the overall look.
Final thoughts
Good text-to-video prompting is a skill, and it builds quickly. Use a structure, keep one action per clip, name the camera and the light, and compare models. Save the prompts that work in a personal library; after a few weeks you'll have a toolkit you can reuse for almost any brief.
