A one-page sample strategy plan by Astra Trading Company. It is a template: swap in your own budget and timeline.
Goal
Launch a weekly crypto research newsletter. Within 90 days, it should build a loyal free readership, show that readers trust the research, and then test a paid tier. Success is measured by subscriber growth, open rate, and the number of readers willing to pay. We'll set the exact targets with you, based on your starting audience.
Options considered
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| A. Hosted platform (Substack, Beehiiv, Ghost) | Launch in a day, discovery features built in, paid tiers built in | Platform fees, less control over branding |
| B. Self-hosted (own site plus an email service) | Full control, own the list, no revenue share | Slower to set up, no built-in discovery |
| C. Social-first (X or Telegram threads that funnel to email) | Reach is fast and free | Algorithm risk, harder to turn followers into subscribers |
Recommended path
Start with A plus C: launch on a hosted platform with a paid tier built in, and use X and Telegram for distribution. Move to B only once the list is large enough that platform fees matter. This gets you to market fastest while you still own the subscriber list, since every major platform lets you export it.
Step-by-step actions
- Week 1: Positioning. Pick one sharp niche (for example, "Solana mid-cap due diligence" or "on-chain RWA tracker"). Write a one-sentence promise and decide on the weekly format: one deep dive, five signals, one chart.
- Week 1: Setup. Create the publication, branding and welcome email, plus a landing page with three sample issues.
- Weeks 2–4: Consistency. Publish on the same day every week. Turn each issue into an X thread and a Telegram post that links back to sign-up.
- Weeks 2–6: Partnerships. Swap recommendations with 3–5 newsletters of similar size. Guest-post on dev.to, Mirror and Medium.
- Weeks 4–8: Proof. Publish a public "scorecard" of past calls, both hits and misses. In crypto, being transparent about your record builds more trust than anything else.
- Weeks 8–12: Monetise. Open a paid tier with extra content (full data sheets, alerts). Test one sponsor slot. Survey readers on price before committing.
- Every week: Measure. Track sign-ups, opens, clicks and unsubscribes. Double down on the formats and channels that convert.
Risks and mitigations
| Risk | Mitigation |
|---|---|
| Regulatory, if content reads as investment advice | Clear "not financial advice" disclaimer, no paid token promotions without disclosure |
| Losing credibility over bad calls | Publish the scorecard and give the reasoning behind every call, not just price targets |
| Burnout or inconsistent publishing | Batch-write two issues ahead, use a fixed template |
| Platform dependency | Export the list monthly, use your own domain for the publication |
| Sponsor conflicts of interest | Separate sponsored sections, never accept payment from tokens you cover |
| Slow growth | Partnerships and cross-posting from week 2, test referral rewards |
Bottom line
A newsletter wins on consistency, a narrow niche, and a public track record. Launch fast on a hosted platform, distribute through social, prove your accuracy openly, and only charge once readers are already coming back every week.
