Airport security bins are rarely cleaned due to high traffic and understaffing, making them a known reservoir for bacteria and viruses.
Placing mobile devices directly in these bins exposes hardware to germs and increases the risk of loss during checkpoint rushes.
A simple habit shift—tucking phones, wallets, and keys inside a carry-on or jacket pocket before reaching the scanner—protects your gear.
If you leave your phone directly in a basket, it can be exposed to dirt and germs from shoes and countless other travelers. Also, in the rush after checking in, it can be easy to forget your phone.
How to protect your belongings
Before you get to the X-ray machine, put your cell phone, wallet, and keys in your carry-on luggage or in a jacket pocket.
Typically, you'll need to remove larger devices, such as laptops, tablets, and portable consoles, from your bag and place them in a separate basket. This isn't necessary when the security line uses a scanner that allows them to remain in your bag. A protective case helps protect these devices.
