There is a specific moment in every WebDAV-mount conversation where someone
asks "is there a version I pay for once?" and the answer they usually get is a
dismissal. Most tools in this space are structured to make that question
awkward, and I think that is worth pushing back on.
So let me put actual numbers on it.
The three pricing shapes you will actually meet
Monthly subscription. Cheapest to enter, most expensive to keep. The
listing price feels friendly because nobody multiplies by 36 when they read it.
Annual subscription. Better per-month math, same structural problem. On the
day the renewal hits, you are making the same purchase again for a tool that has
not changed meaningfully in a year.
Lifetime buyout. You pay once. The number stops mattering the moment you
click confirm, which is either the whole appeal or the whole red flag depending
on who is maintaining it.
That last category is genuinely small. Most tools in the WebDAV/NAS mount space
are one of the first two.
Why the lifetime tier is usually the suspicious one
If you see a lifetime license priced at roughly one year of the annual plan,
the honest explanation is that the developer is running a limited promotion and
the price goes back up after. That is a real thing that happens, and it is not
the same as "this product costs this much."
So the useful question is not "is lifetime cheaper" — it is "is this a real
product, and who maintains it after I pay?"
Here is what I actually check:
- Does the company have a real download page with version numbers? Not a marketing page. A page that says v1.0.70 and shows you a changelog.
- Is there a named support address that a human reads? If support is a contact form that goes nowhere, the lifetime license is a promise made by nobody.
- Does the free trial actually start? Some tools give you a fully functional trial precisely so you never need to ask the lifetime question.
- Is the license revocable at the vendor's whim? Read it. "Non-transferable" is fine. "We may modify the product" is a warning.
The arithmetic people skip
Take a tool you will keep for four years. That is the realistic horizon for a
mount utility — it is infrastructure, not a project.
- Monthly at $1.50: $18/month, $864 over four years.
- Annual at $5.50: $22/year, $88 over four years.
- Lifetime at $5.50: $5.50, $5.50, forever.
The annual tier is not a scam. It is the sane middle. But notice how the
lifetime number is not "cheap for a lifetime" — it is the same money as one
year of the annual plan. The promotion framing is doing all the work in that
sentence.
And that framing is not dishonest. It just should be read for what it is: a
current promotion on a real product, not a permanent price.
What to check before you click a buyout
The buyout is only a good deal if the software survives you. Specifically:
- Does it use a kernel-mode driver, or a user-mode network redirect? Kernel mode shows up in Device Manager under Disk drives and gives you real ACL parsing. User-mode tools show a shell icon and will quietly break anything that probes for a real disk — installers, Veeam, backup agents.
- How many mounts does it allow? Free tiers commonly cap at 2-3. If you run a NAS plus a backup bucket plus a partner share, a cap turns into a second purchase.
- What is the upgrade path? If lifetime includes free upgrades, that is the part that actually matters over four years — it is the ongoing maintenance you would otherwise be paying for monthly.
The part most "lifetime" pitches skip
There is a small category of tool where the free version is genuinely enough:
you mount one service, you browse files, you do not need ACL parsing and you do
not run backup software against the mount. Paying anything for that is waste.
The tools worth paying for are the ones where the mount has to survive contact
with software that assumes it is talking to a real disk. If you are not in that
category, take the free tier and save the decision for later.
My actual recommendation
If you fall into the "needs to be a real disk" bucket, buy the buyout — but
buy it from a vendor who will still be there. Check the version history, check
the support address, and check that the free trial runs today. A lifetime
license from a vendor with no changelog is not a deal, it is a donation.
And if you are reading an article about this from six months ago, check the
current pricing page before you decide. Promotions move, and the number you
remember may not be the number on offer.
Questions about mounting specifics are welcome in the comments — happy to go
into ACL behavior, driver mode, or which workflow actually needs which tier.
