Building an SEO Content System That Feeds a Solo Product Funnel

I used to think SEO content meant writing blog posts and hoping for traffic. Then I built a system that turns security research into product sales — without writing a single "ultimate guide."

The Problem With Traditional SEO Advice

Most SEO advice assumes you're a media company: publish 3x/week, target high-volume keywords, build topical authority. That works if you sell ads or courses. It fails if you sell a $49 audit kit and a $12 checklist.

My products are specific. The AI-Ready Website Audit Kit ($49) helps developers fix security misconfigurations before they ship. The Launch Checklist ($12) catches the things you forget at 2 AM. Neither benefits from "how to secure your website" content — that attracts beginners without budgets.

I needed content that attracts people already experiencing the pain my products solve.

The Insight: Research Is Content

I run a discovery pipeline that scans GitHub issues for security misconfigurations — mostly Supabase RLS policies that leak data. From 80 issues analyzed, I found 9 high-value opportunities. Each represents a real developer with a real problem they're trying to solve right now.

That's not lead generation. That's market research. And it's also content.

The System: Four Stages

Stage 1: Discovery (Automated)

A scheduled job queries GitHub's API for issues matching patterns: "RLS policy," "data leak," "unauthorized access," "Supabase security." It scores each issue on product fit, technical pain, and repo activity. No AI summarization. Just structured data collection.

Stage 2: Qualification (Manual, 15 min/issue)

I review the top 10% manually. For each, I verify: vulnerability is real and exploitable, reporter has budget authority, and I can reach them without violating platform rules. This is where most "automated outreach" systems fail — they skip verification and burn reputation.

Stage 3: Content Creation (The SEO Asset)

For each qualified issue, I create a case study — not a blog post. Structure:

Title: "How [Company Type] Fixed [Specific Misconfiguration] in [Timeframe]"

Sections:
1. The Symptom (what they noticed)
2. The Root Cause (the actual misconfiguration)
3. The Fix (what they changed)
4. The Pattern (why this keeps happening)
5. The Checklist (excerpt from my Launch Checklist)

Each case study targets a long-tail query: "supabase rls policy not working," "nextjs csrf token validation failed," "vercel environment variables exposed." Low volume, extremely high intent.

Stage 4: Distribution (Controlled)

I publish where the specific audience reads:

• The GitHub issue itself (as a comment, after verification)
• A dedicated case study page on my site
• One relevant community (Reddit, Discord, forum) if self-promotion rules allow

No social media blast. No newsletter push. The content earns traffic because it answers a specific question someone is typing into Google right now.

The Funnel Connection

Each case study includes a soft CTA — a free checklist excerpt relevant to that specific misconfiguration. "Download the 5-step RLS verification checklist" links to a landing page with UTM parameters: utm_source=github&utm_medium=case-study&utm_campaign=rls-audit-003.

The Audit Kit ($49) and Launch Checklist ($12) are the only products. No upsells. No email sequence. The case study is the nurture.

Numbers That Matter

I don't track "organic traffic" or "keyword rankings" as primary metrics. I track: qualified conversations started and attributed revenue via UTM.

What Makes This Sustainable

Three constraints keep this runnable solo:

1. Fixed scope: Only Supabase/Next.js/Vercel security issues. No "general security content."
2. Time-boxed: 2 hours/week for discovery + qualification. 1 hour/case study writing.
3. No content calendar: I publish when a case study is ready. No pressure to fill slots.

The Documentation Lesson

This system only works because I documented the process first. The 4-stage QA gate (discovery → qualified → final QA → send) with statuses like approved-email, approved-github-comment, blocked-unverified-contact — that's not bureaucracy. It's what prevents me from sending outreach to unverified contacts or publishing case studies with errors.

What I'd Change

If I started over, I'd build attribution tracking before the first case study. The Gumroad UTM parameters per candidate were added retroactively — messy but fixable.

I'd also invest earlier in the example app pattern. My next-csrf library includes a full Next.js demo in /example showing middleware integration, API routes, and login flow. That example does more SEO work than any blog post — developers search "nextjs csrf middleware example," find working code, and discover the library.

The Meta Point

This article is a case study in the system. It targets "seo content system solo developer" — a query with maybe 20 searches/month. But the person searching it is exactly who buys my Audit Kit.

They're not looking for traffic tips. They're looking for a system that respects their time and connects to revenue.
