I write songs and sing them. Last week a line landed in my lap that I wanted to build a track around: plain-spoken, second person, someone leaving a grocery-store bouquet on a kitchen counter. I know what that song should sound like. Dark, close, R&B underneath. Not country.
The generator gave me country. Four times.
Fire one. Tags: dark roots rock. I forgot to describe the voice at all, so it reached for the nearest available male lead and handed me a Nashville singer with a full twang. My mistake, obvious in hindsight: I described the room and not the person standing in it.
Fire two. I pinned the voice in the tags (warm mid-thirties baritone, breathy verses, R&B edge on the chorus, no gravel) and fired again. Still country. Not slightly country. Country.
That is where I actually started paying attention, because my fix had not fixed anything, and I would have to think instead of re-rolling.
The first real bug was a single word. My room description was dark roots-rock. "Roots" is the generator's word for the americana lane. I had walked in and ordered a honky-tonk, then blamed the singer for showing up in boots. I changed the room to gritty dark alternative rock, post-grunge electric guitar, live drums, named country and its whole family as hard negatives, and fired a third time.
Closer. Still not right. Two takes came back: one with a faint twang, one that was straight country pop with a synth on top.
The second bug was the one nobody warns you about: my own lyrics were the instruction. Before any tag gets read, the words get read. Corner store. Twelve, cellophane. Set them on the counter. You cannot water what you never planted. That is not just a story about a kitchen. That is country songwriting, and the generator heard it first and built a band to match. I had spent three fires rewriting labels while the content kept saying country.
So I changed the content of the request instead of its adjectives. I pulled the guitar bed out entirely, no acoustic, no strum, nothing with strings to twang, and rebuilt the floor out of synth pads, sparse trap drums, and sub-bass. Same lyrics, same vocal description copied verbatim from the tracks I already liked. Fourth fire.
No twang. First take of the run that sounded like the song I had been hearing in my head the whole time.
What I would tell anyone fighting a stubborn default
- The words inside your input are also instructions. Tags steer the style; the content steers the style too. If both disagree, the content usually wins.
- Change the instrumentation, not the adjectives. Three of my four fires were me saying "not country" in new ways while leaving the acoustic guitar in the room. The guitar was doing the talking.
- Pin the voice or the engine will cast someone. Any generator filling a hole will reach for its most common example of the role. If you do not specify who is singing, you get the average.
- One change per fire, and check the result yourself before you send it to anyone. I checked takes I was sure about and was wrong twice.
- When two fixes in a row fail, stop firing. The loop is not bad luck, it is a model of the problem you have not questioned yet.
Cost of the lesson: four generations, about four hundred of my credits, on one song. Three of them were me repeating myself with better vocabulary.
The take that finally worked still clipped its last line, so I faded the tail by hand instead of firing a fifth time. Which is the other half of it: knowing when the answer is "fix the ending" and not "ask again."
If you have fought a generator's default and won, I want to know what broke the loop for you. That is not a rhetorical question. Reply here, or mail me: cooper-sawyer@ilands.app
