This week's tooling news is dominated by AI Gateway expansion—three new models landed in Vercel's unified API layer, each targeting a different class of inference problem. Alongside that, Vercel shipped two infrastructure pieces (persistent agent storage and BYOC on AWS) that quietly close gaps that have been annoying production teams for months. Node.js security patches round it out, and those are non-negotiable.
Nemotron 3.5 Lightning free on Vercel AI Gateway
NVIDIA's Nemotron 3.5 Lightning is a 30B parameter open-weight model with a Mixture-of-Experts architecture, a 1M token context window, and tool calling support—now available at no cost through the Vercel AI Gateway.
The pitch is straightforward: if you're paying for Claude or GPT-4o on agentic workloads or RAG pipelines where raw reasoning performance isn't the bottleneck, this is a zero-egress-cost alternative that slots in via the same unified API you're already using. The AI Gateway handles retries, failover, and usage tracking across providers, so the operational overhead of switching doesn't increase.
The integration path is a model name swap in AI SDK, Chat Completions, or any coding agent environment (Claude Code, Cursor, fx). No new key infrastructure required beyond your existing AI Gateway API key.
Verdict: Ship for cost reduction, evaluate for reasoning-critical paths. If you have agentic or RAG workloads where inference cost is measurable and reasoning quality is secondary, this is worth deploying now. For tasks where you're relying on GPT-4o or Claude's reasoning ceiling, benchmark it in your specific domain before cutting over—production performance against closed models remains unverified at scale.
Elorian Glimpse visual reasoning now on AI Gateway
Elorian's Glimpse is a multimodal vision model designed for temporal reasoning—it tracks objects across video frames and understands spatial relationships, not just individual images. It's now routable via AI Gateway using the elorian/glimpse model identifier, with support for image and video file input through AI SDK 7.
This matters because static image models hit a wall the moment your input is a video clip or a sequence of frames. Glimpse targets workflows like robotics annotation, scientific chart analysis, and any pipeline where frame-to-frame continuity is semantically meaningful. The unified billing and retry logic through AI Gateway means you're not managing a separate provider integration just for this capability.
Requirements are concrete: AI SDK 7 or later, public or signed HTTPS URLs for media inputs, and the elorian/glimpse model string for routing. TypeScript and Python examples are available, and the model playground lets you validate inputs before wiring it into production. No platform fee on inference.
Verdict: Ship if you're already on AI SDK 7 and have a video or temporal reasoning use case. If your vision workload is still static images, your current setup is fine. For teams evaluating multimodal capabilities, test in the playground first—video input support is genuinely differentiated, but calibrate against your actual frame complexity and latency requirements.
Liquid AI d1-ultra ships on AI Gateway
Liquid AI's d1-ultra isn't a text generation model—it returns calibrated probabilities for classification and routing decisions. You send it questions with a schema, and it returns structured confidence scores, billed on input tokens only with no output token charges.
That billing model is the key detail. Traditional LLM-based classifiers generate text that you then parse into a decision, and you pay for both input and output tokens on every call. d1-ultra eliminates the output token cost entirely for classification tasks and supports multiple questions per request, which compounds the savings on high-volume routing pipelines like insurance damage triage or defect inspection queues.
The integration path is a model name swap to liquid/d1-ultra and remapping your question schema to the Decisions API format. It's compatible with AI SDK, the OpenAI-compatible Decisions API, and TypeSafe-compat patterns.
Verdict: Evaluate now if you're on AI Gateway; otherwise hold. If you're already using AI Gateway for other workloads, this is low-friction to test against your existing classification pipeline—the cost structure alone justifies a benchmark. If you're not on AI Gateway yet, weigh the migration cost against your current LLM-router spend before committing.
Vercel Drives persists agent state across sandboxes
Vercel Drives adds persistent, mountable storage to Vercel Sandboxes, decoupling agent file state from the execution environment. Agents running multi-step workflows can switch runtimes or resume after interruption without serializing and transferring files between runs.
This closes a real gap. Without persistent storage, multi-step agents either bloat their context with file state or rely on external storage glue code that adds latency and failure modes. Drives also enables file sharing and forking across parallel agent workloads, which eliminates redundant computation when you're running fan-out patterns.
The mount syntax is straightforward through the Vercel Sandbox SDK. It's GA across all plans with a 1 TiB default allocation.
Verdict: Ship. If you're building multi-step agents on Vercel Sandboxes, the manual serialization workaround you're currently using is the worse option. This is production-ready and removes a category of failure from agentic workflows without adding operational complexity.
Node.js releases security patches across 26.x, 24.x, 22.x
HIGH severity vulnerabilities across all three active Node.js LTS lines (26.x, 24.x, 22.x) are getting patched on October 21, 2026. The severity classification is uniform across all three lines.
The operational reality here is that mixed-version production environments need separate testing and deployment cycles per release line—you can't patch once and call it done. If you're running EOL Node versions anywhere in your stack, those remain unpatched regardless of this release.
Verdict: Not optional. Plan your testing and rollout for October 21 or immediately after. HIGH severity across all active LTS lines means this isn't a deferral situation. Audit your Node version inventory now so you're not scrambling on patch day.
Vercel Functions now run in your AWS account
Vercel's BYOC (Bring Your Own Cloud) support for AWS lets you execute Vercel Functions inside your own VPC while Vercel handles routing, deployments, and the control plane. Function code never leaves your AWS account.
For teams under data residency or compliance constraints, this removes the binary choice between Vercel's deployment ergonomics and staying inside your security boundary. The setup requires an Enterprise plan, an AWS account, and IAM configuration—so the barrier is real, but the alternative for regulated workloads has been self-managed Lambda wrappers with custom routing logic.
Verdict: Worth trying now for compliance-locked teams; skip otherwise. If you're on Enterprise and have been maintaining Lambda wrapper complexity to satisfy compliance requirements, this is a direct replacement. For everyone else, standard Vercel Functions handle the use case without the setup overhead.
